This site may harm your computer... NOT!

A bug in Google is currently making it very hard for new visitors to arrive to Mess.be or any other site for that matter, because it flags each search result as "This site may harm your computer".

The user has to manually edit or copy-paste the destination URL in order to actually visit any site presented in the results.

This site may harm your computer Google bug

It's obviously a bug, because even Google.com itself is flagged!

UPDATE: It was damn annoying while it lasted, but everything seems to be like it was before. The power of Google eh...

The adware altercation: The Guardian talks to Patchou

dwergs says ( 30 Jan 2009 ):

Cyril Paciullo aka PatchouLook who's on the front page of the technology section in yesterday's the Guardian, a British daily newspaper. It's Patchou! Starting with "To some in the downtrodden kingdom of the geek, he is a messiah. To others, he is the devil incarnate" it's immediately clear that the article covers that controversial "sponsor program" bundled with Messenger Plus! Live for years now. MessengerDiscovery's Matt Holwood and StuffPlug's The Blasphemer have also been asked for their opinion on the adware inclusion. Check out the full article for a very interesting read. I'm just copying this one quote of Patchou sharing some remarkable numbers about the popular add-on:

"I now have around 60 million active users and a lot of people working for me, directly or not. About 50 people are working to translate each new version of the software into 21 different languages and 100 more give a hand for the beta tests. You have the official helpers on the main forums and people on various websites doing the promotion of the add-on."

Goodbye T-Shirt Hell Display Pictures: [insert random obscene quote here]

dwergs says ( 29 Jan 2009 ):

Sad news for controversial t-shirt aficionados: as of February 10th 2009 T-Shirt Hell will cease operations. Even though the site still ships more than 3000 purposefully offensive shirts a week, its owner Sunshine Megatron (born Aaron Schwarz) is giving in to the neverending hate mail. "I just don't feel like dealing with idiots anymore," he says after more than 7 years of service (just like us, they launched in 2001). "I'm done. I'm finished. I can't take the stupidity anymore, so I'm leaving and I'm taking my website with me."

We want to preserve a part of the site's disputed legacy here on Mess.be, just because the designs make such good MSN Display Pictures. And because we can handle a few more hate mails ;)

Goodbye Bush Display Pictures: The Shoe Attack Remixed

dwergs says ( 28 Jan 2009 ):

You've probably seen the in the news, but a month ago during a surprise visit to Iraq, former US President George W. Bush was surprised himself by the shoes of television journalist Muntadar al-Zaidi.

During a press conference, the Iraqi journalist stood up and shouted "this is a goodbye kiss from the Iraqi people, dog" and then missed the target twice with his size 10 ammo. Did you know that the Istanbul-based Baydan Shoe Company, who produce the black leather "Bush Shoe", has sold 300,000 pairs since Zaidi's attack... more than four times the shoe's normal annual sale?

Bush Shoe Throw Attack RemixAnyway, creative minds on the Internets have remixed the video footage into genius mashups with for instance James Bond villain Oddjob, Clint Eastwood and Neo. I've turned them into Animated Display Pictures for Windows Live Messenger 9.0 for you and your contacts to enjoy. Also included is the original, so feel free to upload your own remix!

Microsoft has appointed Ross Pessner to manage the Games for Windows label. Pessner, coming from within Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division, replaces Chris Early who lead the department since July 2007 and who has become a casualty of the 1,400 layoffs at Microsoft this week.

"Moving ahead, Microsoft will continue to invest in Windows as a first-class gaming platform through great Windows out of box experiences, our online gaming services including Games for Windows - LIVE, MSN Games, and Messenger games, and through new games for Windows developed by Microsoft Games Studios" a spokesperson said.

Microsoft releases free Love Creatures Emoticons Pack
Microsoft releases free Love Creatures Emoticons Pack

dwergs says ( 27 Jan 2009 ):

Following up last year's Love Family Pack, Microsoft has put together a new Valentine-inspired theme pack well in time for February 14th 2009. Dubbed Love Creatures, the theme pack installer adds fifteen animated heart-shaped emoticons to your Windows Live Messenger account.

Free Love Creatures animated emoticon pack for Valentine

The Love Creatures have just been released in 15 countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the United Kingdom. Germany is following tomorrow. Messenger-crazy countries like the Netherlands and France are strangely missing from this list, but I've been told they will be releasing their own packs. Of course, anyone in the world can download the free theme pack. If you decide to download the English pack, you'll probably want to change the keyboard shortcuts because it'll replace every "angry", "devil", "music", "late", "smile", "love", "geek", "sad", "sleepy", "sporty", "scary", "fun", "wink", "idea" or "sick" you type with an emoticon. Annoying, to say the least.

>> Download the Love Creatures Emoticon Pack: UK (English), Belgium (Dutch), Belgium (French), Austria, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain and Sweden, Turkey.

NOTE: Make sure the two options during the installation procedure are unchecked to avoid messing with your standard browser settings.

Make sure you opt-out of these options in the emoticons theme pack installer

McAfee SiteAdvisor appears to be incompatible with the latest Windows Live Messenger 2009, causing many people to experience audio/video problems when initiating webcam conversations. The related error codes are 0x8AC70013 and 0x8AC70202.

McAfee SiteAdvisor causes webcam problems with Windows Live Messenger 2009McAfee is working on a patch to fix, but the software vendor has posted a temporary workaround on its support pages. 1) Navigate to the following folder:

Windows XP/2000/Vista (32-bit): C:\Program Files\McAfee\SiteAdvisor
Windows Vista (64-bit): C:\Program Files (x86)\McAfee\SiteAdvisor

2) Right-click on the file sasets.ini and choose Open With, then select Notepad.
3) Locate the section titled [msnmsgr.exe].
4) Change Enabled=1 to Enabled=0.
5) Click File and select Save.
6) Close sasets.ini and restart your computer for changes to take effect.

This should solve your webcam troubles until McAfee issues an update to SiteAdvisor.
