Big Monster Battle kicks butt!
 dwergs says ( 29 Jun 2006 ):
|
You can take this post's title quite literally! Big Monster Battle is, to my knowledge, the first fighting game to hit Messenger. Using the video and flash killer combo we've seen before in Dead Man's Tale, this "monstruous" adaptation of Rock, Paper, Scissors reminds me a bit of the Super Nintendo Clay Fighter game.
The person who starts the game can choose out of five fighting zones and each player can select one of the five monsters (called Krazy Clown, Organ Grinder, Carney Vore, Ratputin & Roadkill Racoon). Finally, you pick a sequence of attacking moves and then the fight begins...
If this is how Messenger games will look like from now on... Wow! Less talk, more action for me then!

Mess.be in numbers (not 13 5 19 19 . 2 5)
 dwergs says ( 29 Jun 2006 ):
|
Despite the annoying downtimes now and then (*darn rats!*), Mess.be is going strong! And trust me, we're going to make the neccesary changes to shift up a gear. But first, here are some reasons why we ought to be drinking champagne (but we're not... beer's okay):
We currently have around 70000 visitors checking the site out each day, most of them grazing through collection of free downloads, emoticons, Display Pictures, etc. and of course, on arrival, getting updated on the latest Messenger stuff.
Our own software products are kicking major booty. CustoMess, the free auto-installer for quality Messenger content, has been downloaded for a millionth time this month (quite nicely timed around Timothy's birthday) and three and a half million packs have been installed since the release of this version in March last year.
By the way, we're always accepting contributions for CustoMess, so if you designed an original set of Display Pictures, bad ass backgrounds or killer emoticons, feel free to drop it in our inbox at this address:
Talking about "three and a half million", that's also the grand total of Mess Patch downloads up till now. No surprise, as Mess Patch keeps getting better each version thanks to Rolando and, of course, your suggestions and translations. (In fact, it's being improved again while I'm writing this...)
Due to the recent forum issue we lost dozens of new members (again, sorry!) but we're getting close to 15,000 registered forum users now. And if you think that's impressive, what about the +350,000 (more than three hundred and fifty thousand) registered Messers in our Display Pics & Emoticons section which counts over 33000 free images to personalize your MSN and Windows Live Messenger!
Enough with the braggadocio because we are very aware of our many flaws, but we're gonna take them out one by one. You can expect lots of improvements during the course of this Summer (or Winter, for those below the equator). And yes, that's 2006 I'm talking about ;) Will keep you posted. |
Quick News: WLM security, Plus! Easter Egg, Italian alerts, etc.
 dwergs says ( 29 Jun 2006 ):
|
"Controversy" in The Netherlands over the security of the recently launched Windows Live Messenger. Various news sources (including De Telegraaf) are quoting antivirus company Gdata's findings that Microsoft's updated messaging product, especially the new Sharing Folders feature, is very insecure "because somebody could take over your contact's identity and then share malicious files with you!". What a bag of old news in a new jacket. [Reported by: R-Style]
People ask me "when will Friends List be introduced in (Malta/Germany/Burkina Faso/...?)" Fact is, I don't know. But we'll let you know when it has.
Sssshjjt, do you want to know about the Easter Egg in the new Messenger Plus! Live? Just type /patchou (as before) and click the pig-riding man's nose a lot of times... [Reported by: deAd]
In the list of World Cup goal notifiers for Messenger, I've added the Italian alerts thanks to cavajuolo and CiKKiNo. A lot of you have been requesting English alerts, but I looked everywhere and they're just not available! |
Windows Live Spaces to integrate Messenger contact list
 dwergs says ( 29 Jun 2006 ):
|
Senior Mess.be visitors might remember the days when your contact list showed up at the side of this page so you could start a conversation straight from our site. A couple of months later Microsoft decided to make some changes that blocked the technique. But now, years later, it seems like the Redmond boys are reintroducing the "web contact list" (with a little twist, nevertheless) and they'll be offering the feature with the upcoming Windows Live Spaces.
Check out more of the blog service's future features.

Kung Fu Bunny rewards Windows Live Messenger testers
 dwergs says ( 28 Jun 2006 ):
|
Microsoft is sending a free theme pack with a Wink, Dynamic Display Picture and Background out to all Windows Live Messenger testers worldwide. Star of the free content is Kung Fu Bunny, and invited testers can download it here for the next 30 days.
"Why a rabbit skilled in the martial arts? We could tell you it’s because you’re a bug-busting samurai of the beta-testing world but, really, it’s just because he made us laugh. We hope you have fun with him too." [Reported by: EmSixTeen, balupton, btaber_09, noxs, Atrias, Chris, Dan Morell-Causer, eBait, Matthew Fenton, TheFighter, Majd, 2_05, wellysm, Joca & Uncle Sam]
UPDATE: Unlike the four free theme packs for Windows Live Mail testers, the Kung Fu Bunny one can't be downloaded by just anyone. If you weren't an official Beta-tester, you'll have to (quite contradictory) settle for Beta Man. [Reported by: MattChan, imsoparanoid, Stigmata, Brady Unruh, witbyt & TEENAGER]

Friends List feature rolled out in Spain
 dwergs says ( 28 Jun 2006 ):
|
Hola, amigo de un amigo! After Australia and The Netherlands, Spain is the next country to see the Friends List feature appear in Windows Live Messenger.
Friends List (accessible via View > Friends List in the right-click menu for a contact, or via one's contact card) allows you to find out who's on your contact's contact list.
Other countries will probably follow soon. Just tell us!

Easily removing web limitations from Messenger plug-in SDK
 dwergs says ( 28 Jun 2006 ):
|
The Messenger plug-in SDK is a tad useless because it doesn't allows you to read/write to files, make web calls, create proper forms, or actually do anything but sending pre-made messages. This is caused by the fact that its running with the web limitation by default. So here's the easy way to register your plug-in and allow it to use everything C#/VB.net/J#/etc. has to offer, like... (continued on the forum).

 dwergs says ( 27 Jun 2006 ):
|
I've added soccer shirt Display Pictures of the ten teams still in the World Cup, to CustoMess. Thanks to Messer gotenks_fp from Venezuela for creating them!
>> Download the World Cup Jerseys directly into MSN and Windows Live Messenger with CustoMess.
>> Also available via CustoMess: World Cup Tux and World Cup Buddies.

The Messforum is back!
 Zero1 says ( 26 Jun 2006 ):
|
After calling out the pest services and having our resident rat neutralised we've been working hard on getting the discussion forums back up and working for you guys.
I'm happy to announce that the forums are now again open for business, so why not head on down?
We've lost all of the posts made after the 5th of this month unfortunately, as well as all users who registered after the 5th. If you created an account after this time and are unable to sign in, simply recreate the account. |

View release announcement here.
[Thanks to: iKhost, Kangie]
UPDATE by dwergs: Thanks for the post Zero1! Now, shortly after the release Patchou issued a small update. Build 235 can run on an unpatched Windows XP machine (Windows XP SP1 not required), and also fixes a loading problem on some systems. [Reported by: Jordan B, Ancyru, Jose D and Patchou himself]
MenthiX sent me a list of mirrors which could be useful when the main download link doesn't resolve. I'm not sure whether they've all been updated to the latest build already:
