April Fools joke for the road
April Fools joke for the road

dwergs says ( 03 Apr 2009 ):

One Messenger-related April Fools joke we missed on Wednesday was the one by the Windows Live team. They announced a few "new features coming soon" to almost the entire Windows Live suite, like a "Call Bill (Gates)" button for the Windows Live Toolbar an a "MegaPrint" service for your panoramic stitches with Windows Live Photo Gallery so you could completely encircle your home with a scenic wrap. For Windows Live Messenger and Hotmail, they announced a partnership with the national postal service in several markets:

"This opt-in program will allow you to get all your mail scanned and delivered to you via Messenger or Hotmail - your choice! Conversely, if you prefer paper, you can request to have all instant messages and e-mail printed and delivered to your postal mailbox (postage stamp charges apply)."
At the end of the post, they added: "What day is it again? Oh yeah, April 1st."

Windows Live Messenger hot topic on April Fools Day 2009

dwergs says ( 01 Apr 2009 ):

OMG April Fools! It was hard not to come across one of the several April Fools jokes related to Windows Live Messenger today. In case you missed them, here's an overview:

April Fools #1: Microsoft is in the talks with AOL, Skype, Google and Facebook to make Windows Live Messenger compatible and interoperable with their IM services by Q4 2009.

April Fools #2: A spin-off of the first joke, a leaked screenshot of Google Talk already interacting with Windows Live Messenger.

April Fools #3: If you thought universal interoperability was a bit far-fetched, stand back for the Messenger team's own April Fools: an automatic mood-detector for Windows Live Messenger that monitors your physical state via facial tracking, a body heat monitor, webcam and keypad pressure sensor, and translates it into the appropriate emoticons and/or instant messages. I mean: WOW.

Broken fan!Starting last night, Mess.be's server located in Texas automatically shut down several times for no apparent reason. Upon further investigation, it appeared that one of our server's CPU fans died completely. It has been succesfully replaced and after almost half a day of downtime, everything's running smoothly again. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Israeli hacker exposed via Windows Live Messenger
Israeli hacker exposed via Windows Live Messenger

dwergs says ( 31 Mar 2009 ):

Ehud Tenenbaum, an Israeli hacker who goes under the nickname of The Analyzer, first achieved international fame back in 1998 as the leader of a gang that hacked into the Pentagon, NASA, the U.S. Air Force and Navy, the Israeli Parliament and several other high-profile computer systems. He got sentenced six months of suspended prison in Israel, six months of community service and an $18,000 fine.

Fast-forward to September 2008, when he was arrested again for "allegedly stealing about $1.5 million from Canadian banks, and hacking two U.S. banks, a credit and debit card distribution company and a payment processor in what U.S. authorities are calling a global "cashout" conspiracy." Authorities claim that Tenenbaum hacked into ATM databases, from where he extracted credit card information and made changes to bank accounts. Accomplices in foreign countries then used these details to create fake credit cards and withdraw cash from ATMs in several countries.

Now how did The Analyzer communicate with his accomplices abroad? He used Windows Live Messenger, no kidding. When creating his Windows Live ID (analyzer22@hotmail.com) he even entered his full name and official birth date. This account was then accessed from IP addresses assigned to Tenebaum's Montreal company, Internet Labs Secure.

The intercepted chat sessions revealed to the investigators that The Analyzer received 10 to 20 per cent of the illegal revenue, earning between 350,000 and 400,000 US dollars or Euros. In an IM conversation on May 29, 2008, Tenenbaum wrote: "I hacked this huge bank network really huge. what u think? good hack? (...) alpha.gr is the biggest bank in Greece".

Hacker hacks and communicates with Windows Live MessengerWhy did a professional hacker like Tenenbaum use an unencrypted IM network like Windows Live Messenger to run an illegal global operation? Darren Hafner, an acting detective investigating Tenenbaum on the Canadian charges, blames it on laziness: "I think he's probably been getting away with stuff for 10 years (...) We haven't seen or heard from him since the Pentagon attack. But these guys tend to get this 'cops can't touch me attitude' and then they get sloppy like any criminal in any type of crime."
