#1 The Easy Way
An easy but probably not satisfactory option would be to just set yourself to Online and add your preferred status message at the end of your nickname, like this:
Hugh (In my Hot Tub).
The reason why you can't change these standard statuses is because they're coded into the msglang.dll file that comes with MSN Messenger. If you decide to put your status on "Busy" it will show up as "Bezet" on a Dutch version and "Occupé" for French people. If you would decide to modify the file with a resource hacker and change Busy to 'Smoking', your status would still appear as 'Busy' on your friends's contact lists and only appear altered on yours.
#2. The Plus! Way
But there IS an addon that, among many other fantastic things, allows you to set Personalized Statuses. That addon is called Messenger Plus! and you can download it here.
Within the Plus! menu, go to Preferences and select Predefined under Personalised Status. A name tag suffix can be specified optionally for each custom predefined status. However, only Messenger Plus! users will see the custom name tag suffix without the status suffix. Other users will see both the custom name tag suffix and the status suffix.
For example: Plus! users will see:
NickName (Gone to School)
while other users will see:
NickName {Gone to School} (Away)

Een makkelijke, maar zeker niet de mooiste optie is om je status naar online te zetten, en dan je eigen status aan het eind van je naam toe te voegen, zoals dit:
Huuf (In m'n hete bad).
De reden waarom je de standaard statussen niet kan veranderen is omdat je in het msglang.dll bestand zijn gecodeerd dat met MSN Messenger wordt meegeleverd. Als je besluit je status op "Bezet" te zetten, word het in de engelse versie als "Busy" weergeven en in de franse als "Occupé". Als je besluit om door middel van Resource hakker je status van "Bezet" naar "Aan het roken" te veranderen, word je status als "Bezet" weergeven bij je vrienden, en bij jouw als "Aan het roken"
#2. The Plus! Manier
Maar er IS een addon dat, samen met andere fantastische dingen, het mogelijk maakt om je Persoonlijke Status te zetten. Die addon heet Messenger Plus! 2 en kan je hier downloaden.
In het Plus! menu, ga naar Voorkeuren en selecteer Vooraf ingesteld onder Persoonlijke Status. Een naam-tag kan voor elke zelfgemaakte status afzonderlijk en optioneel worden ingestelt. Maar, alleen Messenger Plus! gebruikers zullen je status zien, zonder de naam-tag. Andere gebruikers zien je naam-tag en nog eens je normale status.
Als voorbeeld: Plus! gebruikers zullen dit zien:
Dwergs (Naar school)
Terwijl andere gebruikers dit zien:
Dwergs {Naar school} (Away)
