I'm unable to sign into MSN Messenger and I get error 0x81000301

Ah, you're a victim of the dreadful: "We were unable to sign you in to .NET Messenger Service, possibly because of a problem with the service or with your Internet connection. Please make sure that you are connected to the Internet. 0x81000301"

#1 Changing your password

I encountered this error myself last night and I must admit it was a bit scary as if Alzheimer kicked in already and I completely forgot my password. So what I did was change the password at Passport's Member Services. I had been signed out of my Passport account and the same, correct password was also being denied! So after answering my Secret Question I was finally allowed to change your password.

That "passport password" combo did the trick for me, but I can imagine there's more to this error than just that, so feel free to comment.

#2 Quick Delete and Fix Attempt (by Jonathan Kay)

Even just trying this solution you will lose all your custom emoticons and display pictures. We recommend backing up your personalized images using the CE/DP Manager before advancing.

Important: Close MSN Messenger completely until the tray icon is gone.

- Windows 98 or Millenium users

1) Click Start > Run
2) Type: %windir% and press enter.
3) Open Application Data and then the Microsoft folder.
4) Right-click the MSN Messenger folder and delete it.

Note: if you're using Profiles with Windows 98/ME, you'll need to go to the Profiles folder, choose your username and then go to the Application Data folder (then continue with the same
process).  If you don't know if you have Profiles setup, most likely you do not (if you don't have Profiles folder in the Windows folder, then you aren't).

- Windows 2000 or Windows XP users
1) Click Start > Run
2) Type: %appdata%\Microsoft and press enter.
3) Right-click the MSN Messenger folder and delete it.

Now restart MSN Messenger and try to sign in again...

0x81000301 error (another 2 ways to fix this problem easily)
Hey..I also got this problem, but you can fix it easily, you don't have to change your password or delete anything. All you have to is
1) Try to unplug your internet cable for about 2-3 minutes and then try to sign-in...

OR IF THIS DOESN'T WORK, TRY THIS:

2) Unplug your cable, exit MSN completety, so it doesn't show in icons (to do it, below on the right hand corner find your msn, and right-click, and chose EXIT.. After you done this restart your computer and when it will start to logg of, plug in your cable and let it restart..

:) anymore questions, just leave a message here...BY THE WAY, THIS SITE RULEZZZzz

i think that the problem has something to do with messanger plus! my computer keeps freaking out and signs me in and out like mad so i exited and deleted MSN 6 and deleted plus! then downloaded MSN again and it worked just fine but as soon as i put plus! back on it freaked out again. it happened as soon as i updated to the newest version of MSN. i had never gotten the message prior to that.......now ive gotta go try to get everything back to where it was before:(

Thanks for the try, I got really excited when I saw this but sadly, it didn't help..

I guess I'm stuck using trillian.. btw, I've looked all over the internet via google looking for a solution.. I guess I'll just have to reinstall (needs to be done anyway ;) )

I was experiencing the same problem, I tried both of the solutions but they did not work. So I installed 6.1 over again on top of it self. It then gave me the opition to repair files and thats what I did. Presto, it works again.

Yep, same thing happened to me last week, luckily I used my secret question to get me back in!

Maybe microsoft are fiddling, or hackers are hacking passports! :S

easy?
all i did was start using the shortcut that msn installed when it had to be upgraded...

That happened to me after the forced upgrade to 6.1.0203. Nothing worked until I uninstalled 6.1 and said no to rebooting, then installed 6.0. Don't ask me why it works only if you don't reboot between uninstall and install but I spent 2 days trying everything else so I figured why not try it.

I have been reveicing this message since msn 6.1 was first released and none of the help you gave fixed my problem. So if anyone knows how to solve this pain, or knows what is causing it send me a mess.

0x81000301 error (another 2 ways to fix this problem easily)
Hmm.... I don't know why you can't do it, but I follow my steps (that are above) but it always works for me... I can't help you with that problem.. but actually try to reinstall MSN....

But I think that this problem occures if you have MSN Plus! Cose my friends have just MSN and they don't have MSN Plus! and they don't have this problem with their MSN..
If any of you know another way to fix this problem, plz leave a comment. :)))))

hey uh.. i tried both solutions but it isn't working. actually, my problem is that it says "sorry, we could not sign you in because the sign-in name you entered does not exist or your password is incorrect. if you have forgotten your password, please clck help in the main messenger window, and then click help topices for instructions on resetting your password. 0x81000303". i know this is not true because i can sign into my email account with my address and password but it wont let me sign in. is there any way to fix this? i've tried deleting msn and downloading it again but that doesn't even work. please help! i want to get back on msn!!

This error is Annoying
The best way is to disconnect from the internet, and reconnect.

If this doesn't work, sign in with another username, and then signout, and sign in with your useal email address.

If this doesn't work (xp users only), sign in using good old Windows Messenger.

I had the exact same problems but the above solutions didn't help me until I noticed that Zone Alarm was starting up on booting like it should. I uninstalled Zone Alarm and it signed on fine immediately after. Apparently the new MSN Messenger has a conflict with certain software, because I have noticed several posts over the internet where things had to be uninstalled to allow MSN to work.
