How can I get rid of the popup spam from the Windows Messenger Service?

People are often complaining of being spammed with popups from Windows Messenger Service. While this has nothing to do with the Windows Messenger this site is all about, a lot of confusion remains thanks to Microsoft's bad naming and we will help you out with this off-topic question.

1) Start > Programs > Accessories > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Services & Applications > Services.

2) Double click Messenger, and set the Startup Type to Disabled.

3) You can also Stop the service at that same dialog.

Good luck.

Please note that Microsoft has decided to discontinue the Messenger Service in future versions and updates of its OS. Bye bye evil spam!

1) Start > Systeem Beheer > Services.

Byebye evil spam!
