Updated: SimpLite for WL/MSN Messenger

dwergs says ( 06 Oct 2006 ):

Secway's free addon that encrypts instant messages sent through MSN and Windows Live Messenger has been updated last month to support the WLM/Yahoo! interoperability, though currently still without actual encryption. Other changes are a bugfix in the HTTP proxy code (caused by new extensions in the Windows Live Messenger protocol) and comprehensive information about the connection in the status bar.

(I bet Mark Foley wishes he had found out about this program sooner).

 Team BritBot: The Winners!
Team BritBot: The Winners!

dwergs says ( 06 Oct 2006 ):

While the entries in Microsoft's Invasion of the Robots competition are yet to be reviewed, we already obtained the results from its spin-off Team BritBot contest held exclusively in the United Kingdom.

msn botsThe judging panel was made up of Microsoft's Regional General Manager, Geoff Sutton, Senior Director, Developer Platform Evangelism for Microsoft, Matthew Bishop, and Deputy Editor for PC Pro, David Fearon. The judges decided that the grand prize should go to InsideMessenger, a bot which we already reported about last year. The bot, that for instance integrates Amazon search and the BBC and sports news, excelled all other entries in usefulness and user interaction. As a reward its developer, Riaan Van Schoor, will soon receive an Xbox 360 bundle, a Samsung 32" HD LCD TV, a Nabaztag WiFi Rabbit, a Creative Zen MicroPhoto 8GB MP3 player, and a Shinco 8" LCD Portable DVD Player. Jealous? Then you'll love to hear that he's going to share most of the prizes with InsideMessenger's users in a couple of competitions, "since without them, we’d be nowhere!". Add chat@insidemessenger.com to your contact list if you want to stay tuned.

Runners-up receiving an Xbox 360 bundle are, in the category game bots, Winning Bot by Dave Morley (add the_win_bot@hotmail.com), and in the category freestyle bots, Yachtcharter Bot by Mike Poole (add bot@yachtcharterguide.com).

Congratulations to the three of you! We'll make sure to let you know when judgment day has arrived in the big IotR contest.

Microsoft launches first content channel on WL Messenger
Microsoft launches first content channel on WL Messenger

dwergs says ( 05 Oct 2006 ):

Thought Windows Live Messenger was merely about communication? Think again, because Microsoft has just launched a new content channel which is accessible via a Messenger bot called Mr Exclusives. When talked to, the bot will ask to launch an activity that offers the user access to exclusive videos, music, celebrity features and prizes.

windows live messenger xclusivesFor a Messenger-based channel it's a pity that the content is not entirely integrated into the activity window but often opens in a browser window instead. That doesn't take away the fact that Windows Live Messenger Xclusives has quite some potential, with the possibility of bringing Soapbox, MSN Music, and other MSN content directly to the 240 million current Messenger users. I've also been told Xclusives is going to feature exclusive video launches for big name bands (really big, trust me) and competitions with signed football shirts and cool gadgets as prizes, so it's worth keeping in touch with Mr Exclusives.

>> Add mrxclusives@hotmail.com (Windows Live Messenger required).

>> Visit the Messenger Xclusives homepage.

>> Get a set of personalized Contact Cards for joining Xclusives (offer limited to UK, or maybe not).

On a day off from work a bored Rakky designed a couple of variations to the standard Plob and Jethro the Clown Plob, Precious the Princess Plob and Mash the Rock Plob were born among others. Weeks later, he had created a whole universe of Plobs™ so he decided to let them loose on the world wide web on an official Plobs™ website. found nemo display pictureOn Monday LiveSide spilled the beans on Codename Nemo, an upcoming Windows Vista add-on that will blend Windows Live with Media Center by integrating Windows Live Messenger, Spaces and Call into a nice interface optimized for large monitors and TV screens. Chris: "Although initial indicators that Nemo would be in beta by the end of 2006, the project now appears to be on hold, for reasons unknown. We have heard it was demoed at MGX 2006, an internal-only Microsoft conference for those working in global sales and evangelism, so we’re expecting (and hoping) to see it back on track soon."

Second animated emoticontest ends here

dwergs says ( 03 Oct 2006 ):

It took a couple of hours before I could announce the winner of the second "animated emoticontest" because I had to rename every single emoticon from our top uploader (they all had the same name), but I'm finally there. Less participants this time but fortunately for our visitors more uploads: over 700 fresh animated emoticons! Thanks shawn84 (again!), cunextue (again!) and scrufz (first-time uploader), but the two limited edition MSN Buddy Notepads go to Messer jonathanyaniv for uploading no less than 414 animated emoticons! You guys rock!

free msn emoticons, msn display pictures, winksThe English-Canadian Kiwee website (previously BlueMountain) has gone crazy and is offering all its content for Windows Live/MSN Messenger for free. Winks, Regular and Dynamic Display Pictures (including Muggins), Emoticons and (Dynamic) Backgrounds can all be downloaded for free for an unknown period. Whether it's a move to significantly increase their newsletter subscription base or just plain generosity is still the question, but it's a welcome move indeed!

Quick News: Yahoo! interop final, tester gifts, etc.
Quick News: Yahoo! interop final, tester gifts, etc.

dwergs says ( 02 Oct 2006 ):

I've been away for a couple of days ("to London, baby!") so here's a quick round-up of last week's stories.

Messer JT pointed us to an article that announces the final release of the Windows Live Messenger/Yahoo! Messenger interoperability (oh, and let me not forget Messenger for Mac 6.0). Though currently limited to text and emoticons, it's a milestone in the history of instant messaging. Hurray for Microsoft and Yahoo!!

Messers (like Trissy, Kashim, etc.) started reporting the arrival of their Windows Live Messenger beta-testing gifts over a month ago, but first-hand official testers who still did not receive theirs rest assured, they're still being shipped. Huuf's only arrived in the Netherlands a few days ago, and so did bigblagger's. o.O Maurits has also let us know that there was a long delay for Canadian testers, which is now being taken care of. What the gift is? Check these pictures from Nathan B, JefTek, Liyster and Laser_iCE.

Last week I reported about the arrival of Windows Live Messenger in five Indian languages. I was told by Abhimanyu, ipab and krazee that these versions are nowhere to be found, which is strange because I got the information from a press release. If anyone finds the actual links to these (maybe yet to be released) translations, please let me know.

UPDATE: The second animated emoticons contest is closing soon, so if you want to make a shot at those two MSN Buddy notepads, prepare to upload more than 175 animated emoticons by tomorrow...
