Updated: Mess Patch for MSN Messenger 7.0.0813, 2nd edition

dwergs says ( 06 May 2005 ):

The 7.0.0813 version of our MSN Messenger patch with more features than a Swiss army knife, has been updated a bit:

- Fixed "Disable Nudge Window Shaking" option;
- Now using TheBlasphemer's Winamp plugin;
- Fixed Title/Artist swapping for Winamp users (thanks to TB);

Winamp users will need to remove the previously installed Winamp plugin (you can easily do that with Mess Patch) and then install the new one (using, you guessed it, Mess Patch) in order for the plugin and swap option to work properly.

Add the Games or Office icon to YOUR Personal Message

dwergs says ( 04 May 2005 ):

We decided to publish a tool so you can experiment with the new Games and Office icons yourself and amaze contacts with your special Personal Message. The Turn on "What I'm Listening To" option must be enabled for it to work and you need to have the .NET Framework installed. Credits and source(s) are inside the little program...

 New Types of Personal Messages in the Pipeline
New Types of Personal Messages in the Pipeline

dwergs says ( 04 May 2005 ):

The "What I'm Listening To" feature, introduced in MSN Messenger 7, is maybe not the only Personal Message option you'll be able to "turn on". Chris reports about two special icons that will appear in ways similar to the headphones of the music option.

personal messages games officeA Games icon (view screenshot) is probably a subtle invitation to your contacts to play one of the official MSN Messenger games. It could also be a sign that you're in the middle of a game and wish not to be bothered.

The Office icon on the other side (view screenshot) could refer to collaboration on Microsoft Office documents (share your homework, peeps!).

Which by the way reminds me of the news earlier this month, about LiveOffice's integration of their IMConferencing web conferencing system into MSN Messenger 7. Too bad the service for full-featured online meetings and collaboration costs $50 US per seat license. Per month! :S Let's see if Microsoft does better...

 Korean Government moves against Microsoft
Korean Government moves against Microsoft

dwergs says ( 04 May 2005 ):

In yet another antitrust complaint against Microsoft, the Korean government said yesterday that it found the U.S. software giant to have unfairly used its monopoly position while selling its Windows operating system.

According to the Fair Trade Commission, the world's largest software maker allegedly indulged in unfair business practices by bundling its Media Player and MSN Messenger (sic, they mean Windows Messenger) programs as part of its Windows operating system. The complaint will be taken up at a staff meeting scheduled for next month, the Fair Trade Commission said.

The latest Korean government's findings follow a recent probe initiated by the European Union, which sued Microsoft for tying its Media Player program with the Windows operating system. Industry watchers say that should the Fair Trade Commission rule Microsoft guilty of the alleged unfair practices, it may become a green light for other countries to penalize the software company.

 MSN Messenger for Sony PSP Hack
MSN Messenger for Sony PSP Hack

dwergs says ( 02 May 2005 ):

msn messenger on sony psp hackApparently, you can sign into your MSN Messenger account with a Sony PSP by exploiting a browser backdoor in the WipeOut: Pure game. After following these instructions you just have to point the built-in web browser to the mobile version of eMessenger and log in.

Now if someone can tell me how to connect a keyboard to my Sony PSP for text input, that would make chatting much easier. Oh wait, that's right... I don't own a Sony PSP :(

UPDATE: Messer homeless pointed me to the Logic 3 PSP Keyboard, a 47-key foldaway keyboard perfect for some hot chatting action and expected to be released by the end of this month.

 Microsoft launches interoperability for business IM
Microsoft launches interoperability for business IM

dwergs says ( 02 May 2005 ):

Microsoft has released an update to its enterprise instant messaging and presence servers for free, a move that makes good on its promise(s) to interoperate with the three major IM networks.

On Thursday, Microsoft shipped Service Pack 1 for its Office Live Communications Server 2005 (LCS). One of its key features is an option called Public IM Connectivity, the ability for enterprises to connect their LCS installations with the AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger IM networks.

With the update, Microsoft also is setting the stage for supporting its revamped real-time messaging client, formerly code-named "Istanbul." LCS SP1 will support the client, which was recently renamed the Office Communicator 2005 and is scheduled to be available by early June.

Until this day, there are no plans for interoperability in Microsoft's IM client for home users, MSN Messenger.

MSN Messenger 7.0.0803 is out there, somewhere

dwergs says ( 02 May 2005 ):

Thanks to Larney last week we had an exclusive look at MSN Messenger 7.0.0803, an internal BETA aimed at testing Mobile Messaging in different countries. Then over the weekend, that specific build got leaked (hey, don't look at us!). However, we do not recommend using the 803 build. Just stick with 0777 or 0813 if you already updated.

 MSN to provide financing and technology for mtvU sitcom
MSN to provide financing and technology for mtvU sitcom

dwergs says ( 02 May 2005 ):

MSN will help Boston University students produce a TV sitcom pilot that will air on mtvU, Viacom's college-campus network that airs at 725 schools.

mtvu sitcomStudents will tap MSN technology throughout the creative process; for instance, they'll use MSN Messenger to cast roles for the pilot. Extra credit: integrate the MSN brand into the sitcom's storyline.

"College students are so technologically advanced that it was a natural fit," said Stephen Friedman, general manager of mtvU. "Part of [this challenge] is to integrate it, yet stay true to your creative vision." MSN will also provide financing and tech support.

The yet-to-be-titled project follows students from BU's Film and TV Department and School of Theatre Arts as they develop, write and produce. mtvU began following an advanced TV writing class in January; at semester's end, scripts will be reviewed by a panel of judges including actor Jason Alexander and director Rob Reiner. The "making of" material will air this fall, leading up to the finale: the pilot's premiere. Then, considering the current state of TV comedy, who knows? "They really want to take this to pilot season, shop it around to the networks next spring," Friedman said.
