![Mess.be presents: MSN Messenger 6 Display Pictures and Custom Emoticons [BETA!]](http://mess.be/_pictures/newsunderline.gif) dwergs says ( 31 May 2003 ):

Here it is, the obvious next step in the Mess with MSN Messenger story: display pictures and custom emoticons for use with MSN Messenger 6!
Hundreds of you were able to have a sneak peek of the alpha version last Tuesday, but today we're officially starting an ever-growing collection of visual frenzy you can show off to your contacts with (as long as both of you use MSN6).
Please take note that this is -just like MSN 6 build 0250 ;)- still a BETA of our display pic & emoticon collecting system! You'll be able to register for an account so you can comment on them and most importantly: upload your own material! Yet we can't promise 100% functionality yet. Categories and layout aren't definitive either. Our goal is to have it sorted by the release of the official public preview of MSN Mess 6.
For now, feel free to browse through our current collection of display pictures, custom emoticons (and chat backgrounds soon). And you're even more welcome to register, comment on the current (small) collection... and add your pics!!
So, click here for cool MSN avatars and icons for MSN6. We're looking forward to seeing your own stuff and if you want to you can use this Mess.be display picture template for Adobe Photoshop. (Display Pictures).
By the way: For those who are competing in our emoticon competition, you're safe to add your own emotes here already because AS OF THIS MOMENT the emoticon compo is CLOSED! |

Will the two giants talk? Microsoft and AOL exploring IM interoperability
 dwergs says ( 31 May 2003 ):
|
After years of IM acrimony, Microsoft and America Online have promised they would explore ways for AOL Instant Messenger and MSN Messenger to interoperate. The announcement comes as part of a $750 million settlement between the two Internet giants over antitrust issues.
The exact moment AIM accounts will be able to chat with MSN Messenger users and vice versa has not been provided, it's not even guaranteed that interoperability actually will take place. The two companies have little in terms of concrete plans besides a couple of scheduled meetings on the subject. AOL and Microsoft said any compatibility would come about only in a way that would "protect consumer privacy, security and network performance."
It's a radical change of position for AOL, which has fought hard to ensure that third parties can't connect to its AOL Instant Messenger network. In early versions of MSN Messenger, Microsoft provided users with the ability to sign on to AIM -- but ultimately was locked out of the service by technical obstacles implemented by AOL.

Big MSN6 Emoticon Fonts & Packs update
 dwergs says ( 31 May 2003 ):
Win a Peugeot 206! Will dwergs be your lucky charm?
 dwergs says ( 30 May 2003 ):
|
Let's dig up a good old news story...
One year ago, in June 2002, I promoted the Roland Garros competition on Mess.be and asked our visitors to sign up, play and fill in dwergs as their sponsor. Only THREE Messers followed my advise: 'Parrainage' in this screenshot :(
When the winners of the contest were announced, I was thrilled to see a MESSER winning the PEUGEOT 206! (screenshot). He didn't even know about it until he read my message! I believe he got his driver's license this year, so maybe he's cruisin' around with a license plate "M355-B3".
Did mentioning 'dwergs' bring him luck? It did give him an additional chance to win. Let's see if we Messers can score a Looxor scooter, Fuji FinePix camera, USB players, etc. or even the Peugeot again THIS year! Sign up here and mention dwergs as your sponsor! If you do so YOU will get an extra chance for the lottery and when it's over WE can see how many Messers won! |
Two more Super Mario Bros levels added!
 dwergs says ( 30 May 2003 ):
|
Timothy extended his Super Mario MSN6 emoticon pack with two additional levels: the Underground and Bowser's castle!
:fear: and download here. |
Parlez-vous français, MSN6?
 dwergs says ( 30 May 2003 ):
|
I received two french translation patches for MSN 6 build 0250 beta almost simultaneously. Who am I to judge which translation is best? So I added them both:
- MSN6 en français #1 by deamoncrack;
- MSN6 en français #2 by Rajicate and submitted by Aonoyme. |
Experimental Nega update: anti-crash patch for MSN Messenger 6.0.0250
 dwergs says ( 30 May 2003 ):
|
An experimental patch by flur will prevent your Nega-patched MSN Messenger 6.0.0250 from crashing when it picks up invalid unicode characters. This patch will only work for people that have installed the Nega patch.
This patch *IS* experimental (as is Messenger 6.0.0250) and DOES contain bugs:
- It will not prevent the XML parser from disliking the unicode characters and thus any log file which contains the bad character will appear corrupted until the character is manually removed.
- MSN will pop up some warnings when closing a chat window which contains the bad character. Why isn't this resource edited out you ask? Because this is just a Messenger beta and you're not supposed to be using it in the first place!
- After the patch is applied, Messenger will behave in a way similar to its predecessors. People using the invalid characters in their friendly name will still cause 'unexpected' results, but nothing as drastic as a crash.
Let's not forget to credit wtbw who devised the procedure used to repair this bug!
Download the anticrash patch if you're experiencing crashes when people sign-in using a 'weird' nickname.
This patch requires Nega for MSN6 previously applied.

Protect MSN Messenger 6 from SARS: make your emoticons wear prevention masks
 dwergs says ( 28 May 2003 ):
|
No need for a SARS-patch anymore, just import the mask-wearing MSN smileys into MSN Messenger 6 and you're safe to talk to everyone in the whole wide world!
- Download: MSN Messenger 6 SARS emoticon pack.
(Watch out when playing games though, don't touch his or her tokens!)

Messenger Plus! kinda chatlogs for MSN Messenger 6
 dwergs says ( 28 May 2003 ):
|
ChrisTorng sent me a file that reformats the MSN Messenger 6 conversation logs into the style we're used to in Messenger Plus, exept for the header field (maybe someone can give that a go?).
- Dowload the .XSL file here.
A suggestion from the author: Maybe Messenger Plus! 2 or another tool yet to be developed could allow the user to make his custom log formats and export them to an XSL file? |
Prospects on Messenger Plus! for MSN Messenger 6
 dwergs says ( 28 May 2003 ):
|
Looks like Patchou is getting a grip on the new MSN Messenger 6. A screenshot shows Plus! 2.5 and its successful integration of the Plus! menu in a conversation window as well as text color formatting! Good luck Patchou, we know you can do it!
[View thread: here] |
Huh, what's happening?
 dwergs says ( 28 May 2003 ):
|
Hundreds of visitors saw 'something' cool on Mess.be hours ago and are now wondering where it went. A little patience is required, it'll be launched when the transfer to the new server is complete! |
MSN 6 Color Patcher
 timothy says ( 28 May 2003 ):
|
And Mess.be is proud to present you the first MSN 6 font color adjuster. Its a very basic version. But it is capable to change font colors per computer user. So if you don't like the pink color your little brother is using you could always set your own color without making him mad.
Get your colorfull upgrade over here. |

A new Spell Checking tool for Instant Messaging has just been released by 316Software. This tool can be used for Microsoft Windows and MSN Messenger [NOT VERSION 6], and due soon to be released for AOL and Yahoo!. IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ: Mess.be is hopping to a better place!
 dwergs says ( 28 May 2003 ):
|
We are proud to announce that Mess with MSN Messenger is in the process of moving to a big monster of a server. We have to make this transfer because:
- a sudden 50% increase in traffic due to the MSN Messenger 6 hype; - the repeatingly crashing block/status checker, one of our most-frequented tools; - we have a LOT more in store for you and we don't want to be limited by available system resources.
The downside is you will probably experience server outages and other weird things while accessing http://www.mess.be in the next 48 hours! Please tell your friends about this message when they ask you what happened to us :) |
Alternative MsgPlus! Support
 Johnny_Mac says ( 27 May 2003 ):
|
Anyone needing support with MsgPlus! for the time being can use Plus! approved fan forum by DXtremz. You can find it right over here. Remember that these forums are not the Official Plus! forums so users will have to re-register to post messages.
Alternatively you can use the IRC channels managed by sock for real time support. They come in a variety of languages all of which can be found by clicking here. |
"Hello Dwergs, I'm Patchou, the guy that do Messenger Plus!"
 dwergs says ( 27 May 2003 ):
|
Since the official Messenger Plus! forums are down and a lot of people are concerned about the compatibility of Plus! with MSN Messenger 6.0, Patchou asked us to get the following message out to the community:
"I'm working all day long on Messenger 6 compatibility and, even if an important part of Messenger Plus! must be coded again, the project is progressing well. There WILL be a Messenger 6 compatible version released within a month and normally, all the current features will work the same way as in Messenger 5. I could release it sooner but I want the next version to have several new exciting features. I hope you'll all be pleased by what you'll see." |
More MSN Messenger 6 emoticon fonts!

Bug found in Nega Patch for MSN 6.0.0250!

If you're having trouble appearing online after you installed Nega for MSN 6.0.0250, you should apply this bugfix.

MSN 6 Automated "Launch Site" button patcher.
 timothy says ( 26 May 2003 ):
|
A lot of people are anxious to play the games on MSN Messenger 6. But it seems that most of the people find it hard to find the specific XML files, and if they find it they get stuck in a blaze of code.
So thats why I created the automated MSN 6 XML patch, it will automatically try to patch your settings if you are signed in, or you can type the email-address you want to patch manually.
Get your little game button fun over here.
Note: To activate all the games after you have patched your "Launch Site" menu you must use this small MSN patch. |
MSN 6 Emoticon bug
 timothy says ( 26 May 2003 ):
|
A little bug in MSN 6 can spontaneously make all your emoticons invisible. By selecting a emoticon, perform a right click, using the copy option, and pasting it afterwards will cause that all the emoticons in your MSN client disappear, and suddenly the whole list will be pasted in the other program.
Thnx to 3v3rt for telling me. |
Sharing a $ tip with webmasters out there
 dwergs says ( 26 May 2003 ):
|
Off-topic, but I thought I'd share my joy! I've just received a cheque from FreezeColdCash! They're the ones to blame for the free screensaver pop-ups on Mess, but partly thanks to them (and! those! who! click!) I can pay Mess.be's expensive hosting costs. Thanks guys.
If you own a site, you should seriously consider signing up with Freeze. |
Nega patch for MSN Messenger 6.0.0250
 dwergs says ( 26 May 2003 ):
|
The popular Nega patch by flur is now available for MSN Messenger 6. To sum it up, this patch removes banner ads, logs you in while appearing offline, enables MSN polygamy, restores the MSN 4 emoticon (removing the butterfly) and hides the 'User is typing' message on the other end of the conversation. All this with just a couple of clicks! Interested? Then download the Nega patch.
**Update: If you download the Nega patch now, it includes a game enabler for MSN 6! Seperate patches for each feature individually are available at flur's homepage. |
Another Polygamy (UN!)Patcher for MSN 6.0.0250, but by whom...!
 dwergs says ( 26 May 2003 ):
|
I know the patches for MSN Messenger 6 are flying around your ears, but look: the leak lured an old friend out of his cave: Heavy_K created a polygamy patch for build 0250 that can unpatch if needed. Is he here to stay? Well, for now you can get that patch at Heavy_K's 'Spring-cleaned' homepage. |
Did you know in MSN Messenger 6.0... part 2
 dwergs says ( 25 May 2003 ):
|
Some little factoids about sending an URL in an instant message. We all know MSN Messenger automatically formats each word that begins with http:// to a clickable URL. But the first emoticon after an URL (eg. http://www.mess.be :D) will not convert to one in the chat window.
And you can send a maximum of 16 URLs in one message. From the 17th included URL on, they won't be automatically formatted in MSN Messenger 6.0 |
Question: Where can I download MSN Messenger 6.0?
 dwergs says ( 25 May 2003 ):
|
Answer: You can not download MSN Messenger 6.0 Beta from Mess.be for previously mentioned reasons. So there's no use e-mailing me mirrors. |
MSN messenger 6.0 Games!
 m_chibi says ( 25 May 2003 ):
|
Yes we have all been waiting for this to happen and it's first on mess.be! Finally we can play almost all the games on msn messenger 6.0 and not just Tic tac toe.
Zipp our very own Mess.be Mirc operator, together with Winchy and Jim, have found out how to enable the games.
From my own experience now, I can tell you that I'm the Minesweeper Flags king, here is a screenshot of how it looks like.
You can find the patch here. The application in the patch is for XP users only. The tutorial is for windows 9x or 2k users!
Note: that this patch will make ALMOST all the games work, Bejeweled doesn't seem to work sadly enough.
Nice job people!

Serious MSN Messenger 6.0 bug that crashes your client
 dwergs says ( 25 May 2003 ):
|
Zero1 reported this to me soon after MSN Messenger 6.0 leaked and Segosa notified me (through SLim Shady) as well: a simple nickname can crash contact(s) using MSN Messenger 6 on Windows 2k or XP and in some cases yourself, without any further effort!
We decided not to publish the exact nickname, because this would spoil the fun for all people exploring the MSN Messenger 6 beta. Actually, we already told you too much... but we can't kill all of you.
Just be assured that we've notified Microsoft and the bug should be fixed in the next build. |
Block Checker pulled Offline
 dwergs says ( 25 May 2003 ):
|
We had to switch off the block checker because of server CPU usage that -we believe- was aiming for a Guinness record. This popular online tool will definitely return soon! |
