Yesterday mozilla launched a brand new version of its browser firefox. A nice feature about this version 0.9 is to launch it with MSN Messenger when clicking on urls. This is only possible on windows XP but here is the how to:
1) Get the new firefox 0.9 from mozilla 2) Go to Set Program Access and Defaults (can be found in top of your start menu, or in the Add or Remove Programs screen. 3) Choose to configure your custom configuration 4) Set Firefox as default Web Browser.
If you dont know what to look for take a glance at this screenshot. |
Swap your Mess.be fanpic for my Gmail Beta Invitation
 dwergs says ( 16 Jun 2004 ):
| |
Unless you spent the last few months in a hole near Tikrit, you must've heard about Google's upcoming free email service called GMail. An inbox the size of 1 gigabyte would prevent you from ever deleting an email again. You can use Google search to find the exact message you want, no matter when it was sent or received. The service is currently in beta-testing stages and invitations are very exclusive.
It just so happens to be that I have such an invitation to give away. I'll be handing it over to a person who sends me a very cool Mess.be fanpic, shot with a webcam or digital camera! Let a celebrity hold up a sign with Mess.be on it, construct our URL with Lego, spell it with suncream on a beach babe's behind... Everything goes, as long as it's an un-edited image (read: no Photoshop allowed) and it's legal according to your state laws ;) Send your Mess.be fanpic(s) as an attachment to dwergs gmail.com and who knows, maybe you will soon secure your username@gmail.com before someone else does!

Backdoor.Prorat found in Plus! Plugin & What about CE/DP Stealer?
 dwergs says ( 14 Jun 2004 ):
| |
A so-called Plus! plugin with the filename "SWMPplugin.exe" and supposed to add sounds to your MSN Messenger, is in fact a disguise for a rather old trojan called Backdoor.Prorat. This was reported by the Plus! fansite Messenger Plus! Zone. [Reported by: soccer5sg & OmarC]
I would like to add that -while this is the first time it comes in the form of a Plus! plugin- this is a very common issue with downloads in general and therefor, it's got nothing to do with Patchou's excellent software nor its "lack" of security. I've seen many MSN Messenger addons and clients (sure, even "MSN Messenger 7.0") on p2p networks (like KaZaA) and dubious sites, which were nothing more than worms and trojans. If you need something MSN Messenger related, simply point your browser to Mess.be and search our trustworthy downloads.
We did however get a lot of reports lately regarding CE/DP Stealer. Norton Antivirus (and ONLY Norton) has classified this addon as a Trojan Horse, so if you have NAV installed it will trigger a virus alert. But we do have all reason to believe this is not the case. Sherv, the programmer himself, assured us: "There is 200% no trojan in CE/DP Stealer 1.4.5, there is no msbb.exe or any DLL by that name, there is no adware, absolutely NOTHING but the program".
Maybe it was just the unluckily chosen name which reminded Norton of the dreadful password "stealers" for MSN Messenger. Maybe it exploits our privacy by stealing images from everyone (and their contracts) using the same PC for chatting. Maybe it reads cached user information Microsoft doesn't want to be found. Maybe it violates copyright laws by stealing a display picture "artistically created" by an individual. These are all speculations, but after the investigation I decided to re-enabled the download again. Just don't freak out when your get a virus alert on Norton ;) |
The Olsen Twins turn 18!
 dwergs says ( 13 Jun 2004 ):
| |
With countless countdowns available on the web, half the online male population has been looking forward to this date, the day that Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen --better known as the Olson twins-- turn 18. For those millions and millions who think this event is some moment of importance, I have added a bunch of Olsen Twins display pictures.
WARNING: Some of them might be a bit offensive and as explicit as this t-shirt, so don't proceed if you're easily offended... or not 18 yourself ;)

Close your door for Backdoor.Ducy
 dwergs says ( 13 Jun 2004 ):
| |
Backdoor.Ducy is a backdoor Trojan horse that uses MSN Messenger to give an attacker access to your computer.
The latest instant-messaging virus was detected last week and can infect an individual's computer from a Website or an e-mail attachment.
"Backdoor.Ducy is being used . . . for command and control," said Vincent Weafer, senior director of development for Symantec Security Response. "Once it's there, [users are] basically using instant messaging as a means to send command-and-control capabilities to an attacker." [Source: New York Post]
What does Ducy do?
1) It creates the file, %Windir%\Msn.exe.
2) Adds the value:
"control"="%Windir%\msn.exe " to the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
so that the Trojan runs when you start Windows.
3) Opens a backdoor on the infected system, allowing an attacker to connect to the system using MSN Messenger.
More information and manual removal instructions can be found here. |
