Display Pictures & Custom Emoticons
Johnny_Mac says ( 21 Jun 2003 ):
|
OMG, we're offering over 3000 images for MSN Messenger 6 already! Sad news is lots of excellent custom emoticons and display pictures that are coming in aren't being added to our MSN Messenger 6 display pictures & custom emoticons page because they're either too big or too small. Remember we can only accept:
- JPG, PNG and GIF images. - Emoticons that are 19x19px, preferably with a transparent background. - Display Pictures that are 96x96px. (Need help? Mess PhotoShop Template)
If you're having trouble finding out what size your images are, go to their properties and look for the dimensions. Also when submitting, please remember to select an appropriate category for each image. |
MSN Messenger Fun... LOL!
dwergs says ( 20 Jun 2003 ):
|
I've added a new subsection to our 'Messaging' category with not a lot of content yet, but the idea is to collect all kinds of MSN Messenger humor stuff like funny conversation logs, parody pictures, ideas for MSN pranks, etc. Check it out, but expect more MSN Messenger Fun later! |

MSN Messenger 6 Preview (0268) installation trouble
dwergs says ( 20 Jun 2003 ):
|
We have received a substantial number of reports from people unsuccesful at signing in with the public release of MSN Messenger 6.0. The solution is: perseverance! :p If the log-in process freezes, you might want to try this simple -but in many cases effective- solution:
1) Close down MSN completely (tray icon should be gone), go to your Settings > Configuration > Software and uninstall MSN Messenger 6.0 again. If the system prompts for a reboot, do so.
2) Download the public preview for the appropriate OS again (over here) and just to be sure, close all running applications before you install it. Again, if the system prompts for a reboot, do so (but it's not likely to happen).
3) Open MSN Mess 6.0 and log in. In 50% of the cases it should work!
Please be aware that you lose all your previously defined custom emoticons and display pictures! Yes, I know that sucks. Mess.be is calling for an external emoticon & avatar manager with backup option and batch import (send to submit[-at-]mess.be). |
Thank you, XL4U!
dwergs says ( 20 Jun 2003 ):
|
I'd like to take a second to thank XL4U.net for the wonderful job they did transferring Mess.be to its new location. Now they're offering quality hosting plans for your website at a low price especially for Messers. And I can tell you, XL4U's support is the best!
Oh, and every Messer's site* that's hosted with XL4U.NET gets 10.000 free banner impressions on Mess.be! (*except for adult, obscene or rip-off sites). |

Quick reference & study of multiple IM platform emoticons
dwergs says ( 19 Jun 2003 ):
|
Blake Nancarrow studied the emoticons and their keycodes in the most common instant messaging clients (Yahoo, AIM, Trillian (Pro) and ofcourse MSN) because he was having a hard time remembering less-common graphical emoticons. His conclusion: "There are no standards!" People using multi-platform IM software, like Trillian, know that it can be very confusing when the codes show different things on different clients.
The statistical conclusion of his study: - Number of "Standard" emoticons: 5 - Similar emoticons on most IM software: 5 - Specific or unique to one instant messenger: over 200 - Meaning different things in different IM clients: there's a few
Visit Blake's Quick Reference to IM Emoticons if this post got you interested. I hope he's updating his page soon to include MSN Messenger 6's new batch of emoticons! |

Update: Nega Patch for MSN Messenger Public Preview (6.0.0268)
dwergs says ( 19 Jun 2003 ):
|
flur released an update to his Nega Patch today, that will tweak the public preview release of MSN Messenger 6 to allow this:
- Run multiple MSN Messengers simultaneously (also known as polygamy); - Hide the 'User is Typing' message from your buddy's conversation window; - Log into MSN in 'Appear Offline' status; - Remove the little butterfly from the MSN Messenger icon; - Remove the ad banner.
You can download it from flur's Nega homepage or from our MSN Messenger 6 downloads. |

Microsoft Targets Rivals with New IM Client
dwergs says ( 19 Jun 2003 ):
|
Christopher Saunders from Jupitermedia published an interesting article on MSN Messenger 6 at InstantMessagingPlanet.com. This is, for obvious reasons, my favorite bit:
"Unlike other clients, however, MSN Messenger 6 users can also use their own pictures or photos to create their customized backgrounds, also which can be shared with others. Such efforts aims to appeal to net-savvy users' desire to customize their Internet experience and their virtual appearance to others. That desire to customize and modify MSN Messenger and other IM clients has given rise to a whole slew of enthusiast Web sites, like Mess.be. Now, Microsoft is looking to co-opt some of that sentiment with the new release."
Yaaay, being mentioned on one of your favorite sites is a big honor. Thanks, Mr. Saunders! My Swiss bank account is all yours! :p |
Follow-up: Patches for MSN Messenger 6.0.0268
dwergs says ( 19 Jun 2003 ):

I've added Heavy_K's updated Patches for MSN Messenger 6.0.0268 to the MSN 6.0 downloads. In addition to polygamy, it now includes an ad remover, allows you to choose what to patch and it works on previously altered EXEs too.

MSN Messenger 6 International
timothy says ( 18 Jun 2003 ):
|
Want to try MSN Messenger 6 in a different language? And the MSN server is still overloaded? Try the following: Enter the URL http://messenger.msn-int.com and add the abbreviation of your country after. You are now capable of downloading MSN 6 in your own language.
Example: You live in the Netherlands, abbreviation will be NL, so the url for the Dutch MSN Messenger will be: http://messenger.msn-int.com/nl
Huuf reported that non-english versions can be downloaded by replacing the lang code in the download url as well. Eg. g.msn.com/7MEEN_US/PREVIEW/NL/SETUPDL.EXE for the Dutch XP version. |
Ooh no. Sign-in trouble!
dwergs says ( 18 Jun 2003 ):
|
Several messers on our #mess.be IRC channel are reporting problems signing in with the Public Preview of MSN Messenger 6.0 launched exactly one hour ago.
**Update: Correct passwords being rejected, MSN Messenger freezing upon signing in, being kicked offline instantly after logging on,... Looks like the Public Preview is not bug-free yet and many dissatisfied previewers have down-dated to a leaked beta again :S |

MSN Messenger 6.0 Preview Arrives Later Today!
Johnny_Mac says ( 18 Jun 2003 ):
|
At 18:00GMT (19:00UK/20:00BE&NL) Microsoft will release the official public preview of MSN Messenger 6.0 on this website, when it goes live later today.
Microsoft's press release claim that this is a "new era" of instant messaging; and to coincide with the release they have launched a Messenger Preview Group that allows users to download and upload their own custom emoticons, backgrounds and display pictures. The group can be found here, and is expected to go live as the official preview is released.
Update: Check out the new MSN Messenger 6.0 website here.

More on the MSN 6 public preview & final release dates
dwergs says ( 17 Jun 2003 ):
|
While we're pretty sure to say you may expect the public preview of MSN Messenger 6 this Thursday (see: yesterday's news), we also have to confirm an earlier statement that the 17th of July isn't the official final release date anymore. It became something more like "somewhere in July or August".

Messenger Plus! befriending with MSN Messenger 6
dwergs says ( 17 Jun 2003 ):
|
Good news for MP2 fans: the current beta of Messenger Plus! 2 is completely compatible with MSN Messenger 6. This beta is NOT available for download yet!
Because a lot of you will take resolving the compatibility issue for granted, Patchou confirmed to me he's going to improve some of the current Plus! features, like logging and away messaging. Even some additional, often-requested options might be added. Expect a public release somewhere in July or August.
Regarding the evolvement of the recently critized sponsorship program, Patchou let me know that in the next build "...less ads are installed on the computers of people who chose the option to install the sponsor. So very soon people won't be bothered with adult search links, dns problems, etc." |
Official MSN Messenger 6 public preview next Thursday?
dwergs says ( 16 Jun 2003 ):
|
We have discovered what might be a possible release date of the public MSN Messenger 6 preview. Zbegra, one of our favorite Norwegian messers already, got in touch with the Director of MSN Norway and asked when the official beta was going to be released and if he could keep using the current beta until then.
Here is the answer he gave:
"Hei. Offisiell beta-versjon kommer på torsdag.
Det er i og for seg ikke noe i veien for å bruke den som ligger ute på nett nå, men sjansen for alvorlige feil er stor når produktet ikke er godkjent for bruk fra oss.
mvh helge"
Ooh, Norwegian is so funky I didn't want to hold the original e-mail back. But luckily, here's a -very interesting- translation:
"Hi. Official Beta is going to be released on Thursday.
There's of course no problem when using the already leaked beta, but chances for critical errors are high since the beta is not approved by us.
Sincerely, Helge (Birkelund)"
Let's stay tuned the 19th of June!

"Lag dine egne emoticons!", the Norwegian MSN emoticon competition
dwergs says ( 16 Jun 2003 ):
|
One month after Mess.be's competition, the Norwegian MSN portal is launching its own 'emoticon compo'. The winning entries will even be added to the official Norwegian version of MSN Messenger 6!
Just a side note: if you want to enter then "bruk fantasien": use your imagination and don't go sending in custom emoticons you've found on Mess.be (unless you designed them yourself of course) because you'll probably get into big trouble with the creator if you should win :|

No, .be is not free! .tk is ;)
dwergs says ( 16 Jun 2003 ):
|
Messers ask me sometimes where to get a free .be domain name like Mess. My disappointing answer to them: .be is not free folks!
If you want to buy a .be domain at 35 euro you can head over at 2go.be (look for a small square with EN at the top of the page for an English translation).
Webmaster gonnabes who can't or simply won't pay for a site domain name can get their cool & free .tk domain thanks to the wonderful island of Tokelau! A lot of messers, like Webtech.tk have done so already! |
The Real Windows Messenger 5 Beta Build 0250
dwergs says ( 15 Jun 2003 ):

Apparently Microsoft mistakenly labeled build 0230 as 0250 on Betaplace.com a few days ago. We're just informing betatesters that the real 0250 has been released today.
