Drivemocion, the LED smiley for cars
Drivemocion, the LED smiley for cars

dwergs says ( 22 Jul 2006 ):

Those of you who own a car will have experienced the frustrations of everyday's traffic, and its crappy drivers cutting you off, slowing you down or just plain irritating you. We all know the common hand signals in those car emoticoncases (hint: it involves a certain finger), but because of their lack of visibility the message doesn't always come across. Now imagine if you could use smileys, just like in Messenger, to communicate with other drivers. You actually can, with AU-MY drivemocion (via Kris). The device "helps you improve communication with other drivers & express yourself by fixing a battery-operated display module to the rear windscreen & use a wireless remote control in the front of the car". Unfortunately, it has sold out at the moment, so you'll have to be patient if you want to make your car talk.

The most enhanced version of the drivemocion only displays a happy and sad smiley, and the messages "thanks", "back off" and "idiot". If you're the more "articulate" kind of driver you might want to consider the paper counterpart: the Road Rage Cards.

Finally, for those interested, Sony seems to be devising a car-to-car communication system with LEDs built into the headlights.

>> Visit the drivemocion homepage.

UPDATE July 26th: Found a video showing the drivemocion in action.

 Seven!
Seven!

dwergs says ( 22 Jul 2006 ):

meepack messenger birthdayJuly 22nd, not your average Summer day. No, seven years ago Microsoft unleashed our favorite communication tool, our online pulse, our "raison d'ętre": MSN Messenger, now rebaptized Windows Live Messenger. Naturally, not many of you have actually used MSN Messenger 1.0.0863 (me neither), but we've all grown accustomed to it somewhere during the past 7 years. Just browse through our (partial) news archives for some Messenger nostalgia.

Happy Birthday Messenger!

(ehm... why am I congratulating a piece of software?)

>> A little bit of MSN Messenger history.

>> Last year's Birthday post.

>> Download the free MeePack (by 3H) incl. two Dynamic Display Pictures and one Wink.

>> Download the free MobileMoney pack incl. one Dynamic Display Picture and two conversation window backgrounds.

>> Download the free MSN Messenger Birthday Pack by American Greetings incl. three backgrounds, five emoticons, two Winks and three Display Pictures.

(More birthday stuff to follow if time allows me).

 Spleaks when Spleaked to...
Spleaks when Spleaked to...

dwergs says ( 22 Jul 2006 ):

It's been a while since we visited the world of the 21 y/o female chatrobot Spleak, but we thought we'd just give you a quick update of some of the new features. For starters, she now tells funny facts about Chuck Norris! Just type "Chuck Norris" and judge for yourself. She is also able to translate "hello" and "I love you" into loads of different languages now, so if you ever need to chat up a foreign cutie, you'll know how to start the conversation ;) (These features are accessible from the Games & Fun menu)

Apparently, Spleak shares my interest for going to music festivals and if you type "interactive spleakstory" you get to choose how she and her friend June get on at a music club in Texas. You can also find out if you and your friends are a good match if you type "Friendship Match". Last but not least, she now responds to most Winks and Nudges! She even gets annoyed if you nudge her too much.

Well, Spleak's not quite human yet, but she's getting better every time we chat to her and she's probably the most versatile and intelligent instant messaging bot available! This calls for a conversation excerpt:

User says:
What are you up to?
Spleak says:
I'm wondering if you're beginning to like me more. Well, are you?
User says:
Yeah!
Spleak says:
You hear that? That's the sound of my heart melting
User says:
I love you!
Spleak says:
Lol, I'm turning a lovely shade of red here *blushes*
User: Plays "Bow" wink
Spleak says:
Yes, I am the great Spleak and you will bow before my greatness and worship me - Hahahaha.
User: You have just sent a Nudge!
Spleak says:
If you keep nudging away you'll quickly become my most annoying Messenger contact!
User says:
How do you say hello in Japanese
Spleak says:
Oh, it's 'Konichiwa'
User says:
Spanish
Spleak says:
'Hola!' is Spanish for 'Hello!'
User says:
you're cool
Spleak says:
Hey, thanks!

>> Add Spleak to your contact list.

At the start of this month, we posted a demo video of Windows Live for Mobile v10.7 Beta. Around the same period, mobile news sites like The Unwired and MSMobiles.com posted screenshots well worth checking out too.

Now, if you want to check it out yourself you can get the Beta from the following links posted by one of our Digg commenters, computergenius (note that it currently requires Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone):

>> Download here or here.

Giving birth to an Eccky, priceless
Giving birth to an Eccky, priceless

dwergs says ( 21 Jul 2006 ):

An Eccky is a virtual kid that can be procreated by two contacts and has to be raised through Messenger (or text messages). One hundred and sixty dynamic variables all have an impact on how your Eccky grows from baby, over toddler, to teenager (within six days, mind you).

eccky for messengerMessers from The Netherlands will have definitely heard about Eccky by now, because it was made available to them in October 2005 and 300.000 parents have registered since then. To expand its userbase and attract commercial partners for sponsoring, the company behind this product, Media Republic, has decided to stop charging for Ecckies, whereas it was €1.50 before. Kind of warps us back to the free love era but that doesn't mean you can start being irresponsible and careless about your little babies... Still, you might want to spoil your Eccky and buy it extra items after all. Eccky will be available for free starting September 2006. A US-English version is expected later this year.

>> I finally added Eccky to our Messenger Games launcher, but please note that it's entirely in Dutch.

 Dude, where's my contact list?
Dude, where's my contact list?

dwergs says ( 20 Jul 2006 ):

Lots of Messers have recently been experiencing connection problems ("Due to a connection problem") and the loss of their entire contact lists. Scary stuff indeed, but Microsoft is aware of the issue and working hard to solve the annoying problems some of you are having.

Messers geertjen has posted a temporary fix for those who ran out of patience, but the big downside is that you'll lose all your personal content (eg. Winks, etc.).

UPDATE: While some of you have seen their contact list return, the server problems haven't been entirely fixed. According to Leah no data was lost though, so you can sleep on both ears.

UPDATE #2: Everything seems stable again.

dwergs says ( 18 Jul 2006 ):

Friends List has been activated in Australia, The Netherlands and Spain for some time, and since today Messenger users from the United Kingdom too can enjoy the feature which allows you to have a peek at your contact's contacts. Right-click any buddy, click View and select Friends List, or get instant access via the button on his or her Contact Card. [Reported by: London_hus and Zero1]

Similarly, the long lost Xbox Live Friends has returned inside a Messenger tab. Unfortunately, the tab currently appears to US and Japanese accounts only (tip: you can change your country settings here). [Source: Major Nelson]

Now when will the merge the two?

 Get ready to celebrate
Get ready to celebrate

dwergs says ( 16 Jul 2006 ):

We at Mess.be have celebrated MSN Messenger's birthday for the past couple of years and I was just brainstorming about what we could do this year on the 22nd of July, when I was told about Microsoft's (first?) "own" initiative. They asked pretty much all of their content partners to create a free theme pack especially for the occasion. Get them at the links below:

>> Download the free MeePack (by 3H) incl. two Dynamic Display Pictures and one Wink.

>> Download the free MobileMoney pack incl. one Dynamic Display Picture and two conversation window backgrounds.

>> Download the free MSN Messenger Birthday Pack by American Greetings incl. three backgrounds, five emoticons, two Winks and three Display Pictures.

Of course, we'll celebrate it on our own special way in a week from now.
