 Spleak BETA: New and Improved
Spleak BETA: New and Improved

dwergs says ( 23 Apr 2005 ):

Spleak, your virtual buddy on MSN Messenger, has been busy trying to become more intelligent. She learned many new features to be a better, more entertaining and useful online friend. Still in BETA, she may appear pretty dim at times, but please help her learn and improve by chatting and interacting with her!

spleakSpleak took some extra classes in history, sport and other subjects. She now knows thousands of famous quotes, to inspire you and make her seem smarter. Spleak can now provide sports fans with tons of results, schedules, live scores and team/player stats. There's also a new feature where you can use Spleak to send emails to your other friends, even if they're not yet Spleak users!
If all that sounds too serious, don't worry; she's working on a sense of humor and learning lots of new jokes ;)

>> Download Spleak v0.86 (now compatible with MSN Messenger 7!)

>> Visit Spleak's homepage.

 Fake Build: MSN Messenger 7.0.0814
Fake Build: MSN Messenger 7.0.0814

dwergs says ( 23 Apr 2005 ):

Props to Damn you Inky for announcing fooling us about the "leaked" MSN Messenger 7.0.0814. Good work by the reshackers though and like Jonathan Kay, Microsoft MVP, said: "it does (seem to) run faster, or would that be psychology?"

UPDATE: So don't bother downloading. It's just your old average MSN Messenger 7!

UPDATE 2: Props to PoTaToX and Rolando anyway for being as motivated as ever to make translations and patches for this "build"!

Sony PSPs are falling from the sky!

messenger plus! contestYet another Sony PlayStation Portable has been given away in the light of Patchou's Messenger Plus! giveaway! Congratulations to Marc Knaup from Koblenz in Germany (Germans have all the fun this week!).

With only two weeks left to go, Patchou added an extra contest rule to win the Alienware Laptop: Starting now, anybody who has "Messenger Plus!" or "MsgPlus!" in his/her name or Personal Message can send an email to mplus_contest@patchou.com with a screenshot of his contact list (where his name or personal message is clearly visible). Out of all the emails received, 100 people will be selected at random to participate in the final draw. When the winner of the laptop will have been picked from the finalists pool, his name/personal message will be verified and validated online without prior warning. So don't remove the tag!

Microsoft Expands Messaging, Partners with RIM
Microsoft Expands Messaging, Partners with RIM

dwergs says ( 22 Apr 2005 ):

Thanks to Lance for reminding me of this one: Microsoft will expand the availability of its corporate instant messaging software to mobile devices and cell phones. The company said it would also partner with BlackBerry maker Research In Motion so that users of the popular wireless e-mail devices can send and receive instant messages as well.

Such products are aimed at office workers who need to send instant text messages without having to sit in front of a desktop or a notebook personal computer, but also want the ability to keep such communications secure and available for later retrieval. Microsoft said the mobile version of its recently upgraded instant messaging program for businesses, called Microsoft Office Communicator, will be available in the second half of 2005.

MSN Messenger 7 rated good, not excellent
MSN Messenger 7 rated good, not excellent

dwergs says ( 21 Apr 2005 ):

Drop by drop valued websites are publishing their final reviews of MSN Messenger 7, now released two weeks ago. And critics seem to agree Microsoft's latest product is worth a 4 out of 5 rating. That's "Good", but not "Excellent".

"You thought Version 6.0 was impressive? Wait till you see 7.0.", heralds Cade Metz in a review for PC Magazine. Paul Thurrott thinks he's too old for many of the fun features in MSN Messenger 7.0. "I may be closer to retirement age than the average age of a typical MSN Messenger 7.0 user, but it's a cool and colorful program," he concludes his review.

So congratulations to the MSN Messenger Dev team and let's aim for no less than five star-ratings for MSN Messenger 8.0!

BlueMountain still offering six free Winks
BlueMountain still offering six free Winks

dwergs says ( 20 Apr 2005 ):

Not as exciting news as when we told you how to download FREE Winks of your choice (not even "news" as these have been available for quite some time already), but BlueMountain is still allowing you to LEGALLY download six specific Winks for free:

Brainfart, Birthday Cat, Let's Drink, Congrats and Going Crazy.

Finally, there's also one meant as an exclusive gift to official MSN Messenger BETA-testers: Beta Butterfly. Luckily for them, this is not their only reward. The hundreds of official BETA-testers will receive free Logitech webcam as a token of appreciation of their hard work. I wonder if it's gonna be the $3499 QuickCam Messenger Plus. Yes, that's 3499 dolllar and yes, it's called Messenger Plus. Lawsuit, maybe, Patchou?

UPDATE: Of course we are aware that the exorbitant webcam price has to be a typing error. After adding it to his shopping basket, breaker discovered the real price was in fact 34.99 euros. Ah, bloody punctuation ey?

Dude, where's My Display Pictures dialog?
Dude, where's My Display Pictures dialog?

dwergs says ( 18 Apr 2005 ):

Are you the kind of person that gets a kick out of watching his/her own Contact Card in MSN Messenger? Nor am I. But then why do we find ourselves staring at them a couple of times per day? Because Microsoft has decided to make a Contact Card entry point out of clicking your own MSN Display Picture in the dashboard, that's why. Personally, I really can't grow accustomed to it because it used to be a path to your MSN Display Picture collection in the first handful of MSN Messenger 7 BETAs. Enter: Mess Patch (v7.0.0777) which comes with the option to reverse the UI change back to like it was!

>> Download Mess Patch for MSN Messenger 7.0.0777.

>> FAQ: Can I make clicking my MSN Display Picture link to My Display Pictures again?

contact cards in msn messenger

On a slightly related note (with it both being MSN Spaces integration into MSN Messenger), I've corrected the FAQ on Gleaming.
