Microsoft Says MSN Site Hacked in South Korea
Microsoft Says MSN Site Hacked in South Korea

dwergs says ( 03 Jun 2005 ):

Microsoft acknowledged Thursday that hackers booby-trapped the news section of its popular MSN portal in South Korea to try to south korean msn display picsteal passwords from visitors. The company said it was unclear how many Internet users might have been victimized.

Microsoft said it cleaned their site, news.msn.co.kr, and removed the software code that unknown hackers had added earlier this week. The program planted by the hackers caused numerous pop-up advertisements to appear on the user's computer and scanned visitors' computers for passwords.

A spokesman, Adam Sohn, said Microsoft was confident its English-language web sites were not vulnerable to the same type of attack. The Korean site, unlike U.S. versions, was operated by another company called Etimes. Microsoft's own experts and Korean police authorities were investigating, but the software giant believes the computers were vulnerable because operators failed to apply necessary software patches, said Sohn.

"Our preliminary opinion here was, this was the result of an unpatched operating system," Sohn said. "When stuff is in our data center, it's easier to control. We're pretty maniacal about getting servers patched and keeping our customers safe and protected."

There were no notices on msn.co.kr or the Microsoft Korea homepage informing users of the incident. The company doesn't yet know how long the dangerous programming was present. Microsoft said it was trying to decide whether to issue a broad public warning to recent visitors of the Korean site as it examines its own records to attempt to trace anyone who might have been victimized.

Alice? Who the #@!£ is Alice?
Alice? Who the #@!£ is Alice?

dwergs says ( 01 Jun 2005 ):

alice msn messenger botSpleak's getting company from a gal called Alice. The new, completely Dutch MSN Messenger bot service is taking over The Netherlands by storm and twenty thousand users have already added Alice to their MSN Messenger contact lists.

I specifically like her lingo command, but the game can be so damn slow you might end up never finishing a round. But despite common growth pains and though she hasn't got a (pretty) face to look at (like Spleak), Alice is worth checking out, at least, if you've mastered the Dutch language.

 Stuffplug download notice
Stuffplug download notice

Zero1 says ( 01 Jun 2005 ):

If you have downloaded StuffPlug within the last few hours (between 06:00 and 09:00 BST (GMT+1) Jun 1 2005) from the StuffPlug homepage you may want to perform a virus scan, according to TheBlasphemer.

Some files on the StuffPlug server may have been infected with the PE_PUCE.A virus. If you do not have a virus scanner (which you should have ;)) you can use a free online one here.

NOTE: The StuffPlug download on the Mess.be server was not affected.

Edit: The downloads on Stuffplug.com have now all been checked for viruses, and we have been assured that they are all clean!

My my my! Whooo! How did we ever get this way? Where it's gonna go?
My my my! Whooo! How did we ever get this way? Where it's gonna go?

dwergs says ( 31 May 2005 ):

*Shocker* Microsoft is ditching the My prefix in the next version of Windows, due next year. Consequentially, Microsoft will have to release a major update to MSN Messenger if they want to replace all references to My Display Picture, View My Contact Card, Add to My Personal Space, My Emoticons, My Winks, My Backgrounds, etcetalotera.

Does this mean we have changelog item #1 for MSN Messenger 8.0?

 My Downloads will self-destruct in 90 days... 89... 88...
My Downloads will self-destruct in 90 days... 89... 88...

dwergs says ( 31 May 2005 ):

Last week I received an e-mail from a messer called Elena who claimed that Winks and the other MSN Messenger content she downloaded from BlueMountain (using one of the free pins or not) was going to expire after 90 days. The CTU headquarters researched some Winks, but found no self-destruction chips on-board.

Apparently Elena got confused by the content partner's new My Downloads feature, which -judging from the irritation among many customers- arrives no moment too soon. The My Downloads feature, which works with MSN Messenger 7.0 only, enables you to re-install products previously downloaded with your Passport as often as you like and on as many different computers as you like. While this affects both free and paid content, it does not include content downloaded before May 25th, the date when the feature was enabled.

Now, and this explains Elena's confusion, the products are stored on the My Downloads page for a period of only 90 days from the original download date. If, and this is an example taken from recent personal experience, your hard drive crashes afterwards you lose your (paid) Muggins, emoticons, Winks, etc!

Rival Meegos service has been offering a similar feature since long time and delivers a better backup system by not setting a silly expiration date at all. Watch and learn, BlueMountain!

sin city msn display pictures"Walk down the right back alley on Mess.be, and you can find thousands of MSN Display Pictures..."

I went to see Frank Miller's Sin City last night and it's like no other movie I've ever seen! "It's violent, it’s sexist, it’s clichéd and it’s trashy. And for once those are all plus-points," like it reads on FilmFocus. Jessica Alba deserves extra credit for being more sexy than as Honey. And Elijah Wooh deserves extra credit for being more scary than as a hobbit.

 Ruling on Microsoft is delayed
Ruling on Microsoft is delayed

dwergs says ( 30 May 2005 ):

Korea's Fair Trade Commission will postpone its decision on whether Microsoft violated anti-trust regulations by including programs such as MSN Messenger or Windows Media Player in its Windows operating platform.

"We decided to accept the company's request for more time to appeal," a Fair Trade official said yesterday. "We will wait until the end of June for Microsoft to present a statement defending its position, and will most likely make a decision on the matter in July."

In November, Real Networks, an American creator of a widely-used multimedia program, filed a complaint with Korea's Fair Trade Commission, saying the bundling of Windows Media Player put its Real Player at a disadvantage. In 2001, Daum Communications, Korea's largest portal site at the time, filed a complaint against Microsoft for bundling its Windows Messenger on Windows XP. Daum said the number of users for its own messaging system had dropped after Microsoft's upgraded Windows platform came installed with MSN Messenger.
