Chinese Yahoo! ad disses MSN Messenger, ICQ
dwergs says ( 27 May 2005 ):
|
Messer Scribe came across a Chinese ad for the recently jazzed up Yahoo Messenger 7.0, that shows the MSN Buddy surrendering with its hands in the air but nevertheless ruthlessly getting its head blown off. The ad also features ICQ's flower logo withering.
In Hong Kong -where the ad is in rotation- MSN Messenger and ICQ are Yahoo!'s biggest rivals, specifically in the Instant Messaging market. Some features in the new Yahoo Messenger 7.0 BETA, like integrated Voice over IP communication, compete directly with our favorite IM client, MSN Messenger 7.0. To be completely honest, it's even got interesting assets on top of that, like free voicemail, a cal history log and blogging from inside the conversation window. But believe me, dear Messers, that's no reason at all to switch to Yahoo! ;)

The ad reminded me of Icon's War, the classic animation by MASO Digital Studio in which desktop icons mess with each other. |
StuffPlug-NG 2.2.229 needs your input
dwergs says ( 27 May 2005 ):
|
TheBlasphemer has almost finished the new 2.2.229 version of his Plus! plugin, StuffPlug-NG. BETA-testing is over and the software has been translated into 19 languages! But before releasing, TB wants to improve overall user-friendliness. For example, and hurray for this decision, the Validation Key has been dropped. Other long-term plans include live support chat (on the homepage) and an auto-update feature. If you have any other suggestions on what could improve the StuffPlug installer or make the user interface easier, drop TB a line (don't suggest new features unless you really want to get on his nerves!).

Wear your MSN Display Picture: Threadless sale!
dwergs says ( 26 May 2005 ):
|
Me, I regularly use the prints from my t-shirts as my MSN Display Picture, merging both the online and offline expression of my self (wow, some philosophy huh?). If you think that's a cool idea, why not start with the great designs from Threadless? They're temporarily having a remarkable sale with ALL their t-shirts priced ONLY US $10 (that's €8 or £5.50, they ship worldwide!). And to make it really easy for you, I already created MSN Display Pictures of some of their best designs.

GRATIS Blinkning! That's Swedish for: FREE MSN WINKS!
dwergs says ( 26 May 2005 ):
|
Like several times before, we have obtained another working code for downloading free MSN Winks. You can normally use the pin only once, but we wouldn't be Mess.be if we didn't tell you how to use it multiple times:
1) Go here and click one of the MSN Winks.
2) Under the Köp button, click "Har du redan en PIN-kod?".
3) In the first field, enter any e-mail address. In the second one, enter gratiswink.
4) Make sure you're logged into MSN Messenger 7 and click Skicka. The MSN Wink will be imported into your account automatically and for free!
5) To use this code again, you have to get rid of the site's Cookie. In Internet Explorer go to Tools > Internet Options and click the Delete Cookies. Now repeat these instructions beginning with step 1.
NOTE: If Cookies you gathered from other sites are dear to you, you'll have to manually delete this specific one by going to your Temporary Internet Files directory (paste %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files in Start > Run) and delete Cookie:username@mypersonalexpression.com/.
TIP: If you're a Star Wars kid, check out the Darth Vader and Yoda says Yo! MSN Winks!

Win something else than webcams *Gotcha!* Win MORE webcams!
dwergs says ( 26 May 2005 ):
|
Seems like MSN is extending Bill Gates' vision of a computer in every household, to a webcam in every household (Does someone else smell "Big Brother" here?). With kazillions of Logitech webcams being parcelled out (in pairs, even!) in dozens of competitions, there's hardly an excuse anymore NOT to have a webcam. I've even won two myself, gave one to my retard cousin (sorry, world). And because you never win enough webcams, here are some more competitions:
- 600 Pairs of Webcams: residents of Australia only, closes May 29th.
- 600 Pairs of Webcams: residents of the United Kingdom only, closes June 16th.
- 750 Pairs of Webcams: residents of France only, opens 22nd of June, closes July 31.
These competitions are very likely to be organised in other countries too. We'll keep you informed. And if you fancy winning a plasma TV, read this news.
UPDATE: Seems like this new competition explains the stupid mistake in the e-mails to the confused Gotcha! winners. Evidently, MSN mixed up the login URLs for the two competitions. Thanks again for your find, brindlefly! |
Gotcha webcam prize already? We now know how!
dwergs says ( 25 May 2005 ):
|
We have some very good news for the many webcam winners who felt like losers before. And we got a messer to thank for it!
While messing with the URL from the e-mail sent out to winners of the Gotcha! competition, brindlefly discovered that the REAL site to claim your webcam prize is located at a different URL. There has not been any official communication from MSN or Logitech about their mistake yet and -while we're excited to report this exclusively- we can not promise that you will actually receive webcams via this method. But judging from this screen it does seem to work!
NOTE: For all of you doubting the authenticity of this competition, the ever-suspicious-of-everything Timothy found that the Gotcha competition was, just like many other MSN marketing campaigns, created by a UK company called Thin Martian. Hell, the same company even made MSN Messenger fridge magnets!

3 sets Critters loose on MSN
dwergs says ( 24 May 2005 ):
|
Mobile network 3 has teamed up with MSN UK for an integrated marketing campaign. Virtual versions of 3's cult advertising characters called Critters, are offered (exclusively) to the 8.5m users of MSN Messenger in the United Kingdom in the form of display pics, emoticons and Winks. In one Wink the panda cartoon pulls out his heart before collapsing on the ground. In another, the turtle produces a bunch of flowers, one of which then eats him. 3 said it is the first mobile operator to use the Theme Packs as a brand out-reach device.

FREE Pepsi Meegos for the first 1000
dwergs says ( 24 May 2005 ):
|
cm_mc was so kind to share his find about the 1000 free Pepsi Meegos they're giving away in Australia. For a free Meego you need to be willing to wear 3 or more items from the Pepsi range, thus deeply integrating the company image into your Dynamic Display Picture. MSN was not kidding when it said it wanted to communicate brands through their audience.
Anyway, this offer will not last long -especially not after posting it in the Mess.be news- so if you're interested, better hurry! |

dwergs says ( 23 May 2005 ):

We're thrilled to announce that last week we passed the magic one million installs through our free CustoMess for MSN Messenger 7 software. At the time of writing this post exactly 1,200,572 free MSN Emoticons, MSN Display Pictures or MSN Background packs have been automagically installed by (Custo)Messers.
Of course we're celebrating this milestone. And not just today: every Monday from now on will be called CustoMess Monday. We promise to add at least one new quality pack at the start of every week!
This first CustoMess Monday we are very grateful to Luke for his wonderful contribution of five stylish emoticon sets: Glass (animated), Creatures, Cheeky, Living Dead and Miscellaneous. If you want to see more of Luke's smiley creations, be sure to visit his site called Emoticon Monster! If you want to get a hold of these sets instantly, download CustoMess.
>> Download CustoMess for MSN Messenger 7.

Short News: Laptops, GAIM, bad promotion and tennis!
dwergs says ( 23 May 2005 ):
|
James Evans informed us about a competition where Hit40UK is giving away Sony VAIO laptops and 50 webcams (enough with webcam prizes already!) at random to people who add hit40uk@hotmail.co.uk to their contact lists and -as soon as the address logs on- tell it their name and the answer to the question: "Which singer has just completed her 'Showgirl Tour'?". TIP: Her first name rhymes with smiley.
Inky reminded us to update our Gaim download link to v1.3.0. Since the last version we posted, many bug and security fixes have been made to the popular multi-protocol IM client.
On a funny note: immediately after we linked to the new promotional MSN Messenger site, messers Endophyte and StoleNGuitaR noticed that the conversation window screenshot under the Expressions tab actually shows error messages telling that the contact's client does not support Winks. So much for good promotion.
Finally, the French grand slam Roland Garros kicked off again today. And like the past couple of years, so did the yearly contest. In 2002 a messer -of all people- won the grand prize: a Peugeot 206. This year a gorgeous plasma TV is up for grabs along with 300 other prizes. Interested? Sign up and make sure you enter mess as "your sponsor" (see screenshot). Not only have we proven to be a lucky charm in the past, you'll even get an extra chance of winning if you put us up as your sponsor! |
Gotcha webcam prize? I don't think so!

Mamie, Jimbob1630, Shrikant, IOAF, Johnston, ChrisO, Z4kir, Midas, Paulio, neilf4321, brindlefly, bluetoaster, Blade, cherrybomb, moom210, Jeff, Mitchell Fry... The list of Messers who won a pair of Logitech webcams in the Gotcha! competition but fail to claim them goes on. The words "Fake!" and "scam" are being used regularly in the related forum thread, but several visitors have already received the following apology e-mail:
"We apologize for the inconvenience caused in claiming your prize for the competition. This was caused by a system error on our end. The issue has been corrected and you should have received new communication from us on how to claim your prize."
It seems like the "new communication" has not been sent out yet but we'll give them a day or two. We'll keep you posted!

Watskeburt?!
dwergs says ( 22 May 2005 ):
|
Watskeburt is Dutch neo-slang for "What's up" or "What has happened?". It also happens to be the title of a massive hiphop tune by De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig (translated: "the youth of today"), currently aiming for the charts in Belgium and The Netherlands (that's 9% of our visitor base!). Yours truly already fell victim for the beats and humor of this silly track, so I created some Watskeburt?! MSN Display Pictures to spread the hype.
Admittedly, most of you will have no idea what this is all about. But to the rest of you: spread the word, tell your friends, watskebuuuuuurt!
>> Visit De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig (not able to cope with the hype, it seems).
>> Browse Watskeburt?! MSN Display Pictures.
NOTE: The server is still going through some changes. Our MSN Display Pictures and MSN Emoticons collection is now likely to show blank pages every now and then. Don't worry, this will be fixed tomorrow! |
