A new version of Windows Messenger has been released on Friday the 13th. Windows Messenger 5.1.0680 is currently available in English only. Other languages will be available in June 2005. This release improves the following features:
1) Improves the file transfer functionality for users who have multiple network connections. These multiple network connections include configurations for users who have wired wireless network or VPN connections. 2) Improves presence integration with programs. For example, this version includes the functionality to update presence information in Microsoft Outlook and in Microsoft Windows SharePoint services.
3) Provides support for Microsoft Windows XP 64-bit.
4) Improves security by using the latest secure components. Additionally, URL links are now non-clickable. This behavior is by default.

Reminder: Got MSN Messenger 7.0.0814? Got fooled!
dwergs says ( 14 May 2005 ):

Every so often I still receive news submissions about MSN Messenger "7.0.0814" and the question why there is no Mess Patch for that build yet. With this post I'd like to remind everyone that there never was an official "7.0.0814" version and that it concerns a client slightly modified by reshack-maniac Volvok.
Check Help > About MSN Messenger to see what version you own. If it's 7.0.0814, we advise you to uninstall MSN Messenger completely and get MSN Messenger 7.0.0813 instead, which officially is the latest version. A Mess Patch for 7.0.0813 can be downloaded here. |

From Monopoly to Blogpoly
dwergs says ( 13 May 2005 ):

Somebody took the time to re-think the 70 year old Monopoly board game and port it to today's Blogosphere eco-system.
The space is limited, so the creator of Blogpoly picked well known names in the industry. The two public utilities (water works and the electric company), were replaced by Wikipedia and Creative Commons, a criminal is now a spammer, free parking turned into free hosting. Chance and community chest became comment and trackback. And the railway stations? Those are the big four Instant Messaging networks: ICQ, AOL, Yahoo! and of course MSN.

MSN Buys MSN Messenger Alerts service, MessageCast
dwergs says ( 12 May 2005 ):

After working together for the past 18 months, the MSN network announced that it has acquired substantially all the assets of MessageCast Inc., the 2002 startup that provides automated alerting and messaging like our own opt-in Mess.be News Alerts, for instance.
"This acquisition builds on the robust MSN Alerts platform, enabling tighter integration with the MessageCast technology. It also extends MSN Alerts to new content channels, helping to expand the ability of MSN to connect consumers to the information and people they care about most."
MessageCast counted about 350,000 subscribers as of February, among them over sixteen thousand Messers. Mess.be was one of the first blogs to offer the free alerts to its visitors, and with millions of sent messages since then we're being considered one of the highest volume sites. However, during the indefinite period of this transition, no news alerts will be sent out. We're hoping that the service returns soon!
>> Sign up for the Mess.be News Alerts (effective again soon).

The mass-hoarding of free Winks does not end here
dwergs says ( 10 May 2005 ):

By posting various cheats to get dozens of MSN Messenger 7 Winks for free, we're not exactly making ourselves popular with the people from Blue Mountain. On the other hand, we do drive ten thousands of visitors to their site with our, as I call it, "FREE-promotion" ;)
Anyway, the pincode to get unlimited free Winks* still works, but the previously posted methods just need an extra step. After you download your free Wink, you have to get rid of your Cookies (in Internet Explorer go to Tools > Internet Options and click the Delete Cookies).
If your bond with your Cookies is too strong, you can manually delete the Blue Mountain one by going to your Temporary Internet Files directory (Usually that's C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files... just paste %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files in Start > Run) and delete all the stuff coming from bmamessenger.com (if you can't find anything, change the file sorting to Last Modified and check the last ones in the list).
*For those who visit Mess.be too sporadically, the free pin is bluemountain. Oh, and now is a good time to change your surfing habits and visit us daily... understand?

The future is now: MSN Wave 11 skin
dwergs says ( 09 May 2005 ):

Do you remember, back when MSN Messenger 7 was still in BETA, the screenshot that surfaced showing what appeared to be yet another future version of MSN Messenger? The enthusiasm about the leaked visual was huge, even long after we found out it was actually "nothing more" than a MSN Messenger Wave 11 prototype created as an assignment for the Microsoft Corporation.
After weeks of work, hours of testing and numerous revisions, the demand for a working version of the concept is finally answered by somebody from within MSN Messenger skinning scene. The person to thank/praise/worship (choose what's appropriate) for bringing it to life is theunknown, also known from his work on the immensely popular Mess Patch.
"This skin culminates everything I have learned regarding skinning Messenger, so it should be no surprise that if it [is] changeable, it [has] been changed", theunknown says, and he's not kidding. After installing this skin on top of MSN Messenger 7.0.0813, trust me, you'll hardly recognize the ordinary MSN Messenger 7! Because it requires an unmodified version of the original client, the skin setup comes with optional polygamy, ad remover, games.mess.be menu, etc. And that's not all, you also get to choose one of six color schemes for optimal integration into your Windows theme!
>> Download MSN Wave 11 Skin for MSN Messenger 7.0.0813 and get a taste of the "future".

Updated: Four MSN Messenger 7 Skins by Rolando
dwergs says ( 09 May 2005 ):

Though being busy with many real-life issues (that is a good excuse), Skin God Rolando managed to update four of his popular MSN Messenger skins for versions 7.0.0777 (final), 7.0.0803 (leaked BETA) and the current 7.0.0813 (QFE). Check Help > About if you're unsure about your version number, but chances are very high you're using one of these. These skins require an unpatched version of MSN Messenger 7 but come with common tweaks like polygamy, ad removal and custom MSN games, etc.

Win Face Time with A Star!
dwergs says ( 09 May 2005 ):

Highlighting the full-screen video conversation feature in MSN Messenger 7, MSN is organizing Celebrity Face-time Contests in several countries where you can win a video conversation with celebrities like Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jesse Metcalfe, Dulé Hill, Nicole Richie or Tom Brady. In order to win, US or Canada residents aged 18 years or older have to go here and give three damn good reasons why they should win. Contestants will be judged on creativity, sincerity, and crunk factor. Five hundred semi-finalists will get to have video conversations with their friends (wow, hurray!) when they win 2 webcams each.
People from the United Kingdom also get a chance to win a private video convo with Jesse "Desperate Housewife's Toy Boy" Metcalfe if they can come up with three original reasons (why always three? Isn't one enough?) why they should win here. Again, cargo vessels full of Logitech webcams will be given away to runners-up. And just so you know, future celebrity video conversation victims in the UK include the Sugababes, Andrew Flintoff and a yet unknown Big Brother participant (oh boy, the suspense!).
We are currently not aware of Celebrity Face-time contests in other countries than the US, Canada and the UK. Let us know if you are.
If you're not a serial starf***er, there's still another interesting competition in the UK with a Portable Media Center and 100 webcams up for grabs. In order to win, you'll have to guess what films all five charades are depicting. Stuck? Have a glimpse at the glues that are given. Enter the Charades competiton and good luck!

There's no such thing as FREE Winks, Guiños, Animoticons...
dwergs says ( 08 May 2005 ):

Just kidding. Of course there is! Seems like we're going to see some Messers OD'-ing on Winks this weekend, as we've learned another trick to get multiple free Winks with a single pincode. So far, I've only tried this with the bluemountain pin mentioned in the two posts below, but maybe somebody can see if it works with any pin?
The idea behind this Free Wink Trick is to visit the many regional BlueMountain pages instead of the same one from the link we provided. Here's a handful of them already and remember you can get one free Wink per pincode per e-mail address per regional site (or should I arrange that sentence differently?). Note that regional sites sometimes have country/language-specific Winks:
>> BlueMountain US (I believe the newest Winks make their début here).
>> BlueMountain Australia.
>> BlueMountain UK (this is the link from the previous two posts).
>> BlueMountain The Netherlands (Check out "Hoera!" and "Ga weg!")
>> BlueMountan France ("The French call them "les Clins d'oeil...")
>> BlueMountain Sweden ("Blinkningar" is Swedish for Winks).
>> BlueMountain Germany (Winks are called "Animoticons" in Germany).
>> BlueMountain Italy (Just like in Germany, Winks are known as Animoticons in Italy).
>> BlueMountain Spain (Guiños is Spanish for Winks).
That's it for now. Snort one Wink at a time, please!

Wink-a-holics discover new trick for unlimited FREE Winks
dwergs says ( 08 May 2005 ):

Because the previously mentioned methods for getting unlimited free Winks with just one pincode are a bit whimsical, several messers have come up with a new trick so unbelievably obvious it's simply outrageous BlueMountain hasn't thought about thwarting it.
1) Sign into MSN Messenger 7.0. 2) Open this link in Internet Explorer to go to BlueMountain. 3) Select your favourite Wink. 4) Click the 'Already Have a Pin?' link. 5) NEW Enter a different made up e-mail address (eg. with random letters and numbers) per Wink you download. 6) Enter the pin code: bluemountain and click "Submit".
Take your time this Sunday afternoon to download all the Winks you can get by repeating steps 1 to 6. It's probably only a matter of hours or days until BlueMountain fixes the bug...
