Nickname Formatting Work Around
 timothy says ( 14 Nov 2003 ):
| |
Mess wouldn’t be Mess if we didn’t figure out a work around for "restrictions". So here you’ll get the work around for the restriction on nickname formatting that Microsoft applied today. This work around is only usable for people that are working with external clients.
How does it work? Well, remember in the old days, the server did not allowed filthy words in your nick, and this was bypassed by using raw decimal formatting. Well, this works more or less the same way, but you must trigger a small bug first.
The char code for the MP2 formatting is 3. So in raw MSN nick format it would be %03. But Microsoft isn’t dumb any more, so they disallowed this code as well.
But there is one way to confuse the server, just put another % in front of this code and it will accept the nick. The only problem is that you will have a % in your name every time you want to change color.
An example command you will have to send to the server:
REA 69 email@hotmail.com %%03(255,128,000)%20your%20nick%%10\r\n |
MSN Protocol Update Kills Nickname Formatting
 zipp says ( 14 Nov 2003 ):
| |
MSN seems to have silently updated their active protocol during so called maintenance downtime. It has been reported that the protocol change has effectively wiped out the ability to use Messenger Plus! formatting tags in your MSN Nickname.
This is a server-side issue and it seems that we will have to wait until Patchou thinks up a work around if possible.
Your nickname formatting will remain until you try and change it. Please note there is no work around as of yet, but we will inform you if one is found. You can read more and post on this subject here!.
UPDATE (thanks to Theo): Because a certain character is blocked from being used in your display name, multiline nicknames such as the underlined nickname or boxed nickname are disabled. What is Microsoft up to?

MSN Messenger 6.1.0202 Patches
 dwergs says ( 13 Nov 2003 ):
| |
First up is Nega, the allround MSN tweak that disables the '... is typing' message, removes the banner ads and the butterfly from the MSN tray icon, makes you appear offline automatically upon signing in and enables mutli MSN (aka polygamy). Download it here or visit the Nega homepage for stripped down versions of the patch (eg. without the user is typing removal or the appearing offline forcer).
A second patch is Onno's Patcher++. It removes the banner ads from MSN Messenger 6.1.0202 and/or enables polygamy (you can choose to apply one or both). Great about this patch is its ability to undo your changes at a later stage. Download here. |

Expected Mess.be Downtime
 dwergs says ( 12 Nov 2003 ):
| |
Your favorite website (ok ok, don't ruin this fantasy for me please ;)) is expected to be down for an unpredictable while later today. We're sorry for the inconvenience, but in the meantime we would like you to help at least three old ladies cross the street and rescue a cat (or somebody dressed as one) from a tree. See you soon!
UPDATE: The expected downtime still didn't take place.
Oh, and I wish my dear friend Phil a superdeluxe Birthday! :D Blow dem candles mate! |
Enormous MSN Messenger Outage
 dwergs says ( 12 Nov 2003 ):
| |
For the last couple of hours there has been a huge MSN Messenger outage on a very large (global?) scale. People are gradually re-appearing on my contact list. More info will probably follow.
Meanwhile, Mess.be was flooded with messers wanting to find out what was going on, so we've been having difficulties staying in the air as well. |
Added: Cyclops Emoticons by MNeMoNiCuZ
 dwergs says ( 11 Nov 2003 ):
| |
MNeMoNiCuZ, the poor fella. His Internet connection is broken which means he'll probably miss me posting another incredibly great emoticon set of his, called Cyclops. But I'm sure he'll hear about it one way or another. This MSN Messenger 6 emoticon set includes over 20 Jacks with one eye expressing those typical chat emotions.
Download the entire Cyclops Emoticons Pack or browse them individually. |

Today we would like to find out what music Messers listen to. Of course not every single genre is listed as an option in our poll and most of you will actually love several genres, but from the available options please select the style that's on your stereo mostly or you collect the most records from. Please vote here. |

| |
Still no MSN Messenger updates for Smartphone owners. Smartphone 2002 users can get a third party substitute Messenger called Agile Messenger that supports the new protocol, but users of the Smartphone 2003 system are totally neglected. |

Music display pictures divided into genres
 dwergs says ( 09 Nov 2003 ):
| |
I'm currently reorganising Music Display Pictures into 4 subcategories: Rock, Pop, Hip Hop & R 'n B and Dance & Electronica.
There's over 200 rock display pictures, but the other genres are still under-represented so please help us out. If you're not sure what genre you should upload your display pic into, put it in the main category where other music genres will be collected as well.
