Steal custom emoticons and display pictures your buddies are using!

dwergs says ( 06 Jun 2003 ):

Got your eyes on cool custom emoticons and/or display pictures your friends are using but wouldn't share?

The Custom Emoticon and Display Picture Stealer created by Sherv scans, views and rips your buddies display pictures and steal their custom emoticons (once viewed) by one simple click of the 'Scan' button! This makes CE|DP Stealer by Sherv the first official Display Picture and Custom Emoticon nicker ever released!

Rippers, please proceed to download! ;) (Based on reports from some messers we have to mention it's not 100% stable... yet)

flur strikes with Nega Patch for PalmOS and paper how to steal custom emoticons and IPs!
flur strikes with Nega Patch for PalmOS and paper how to steal custom emoticons and IPs!

dwergs says ( 06 Jun 2003 ):

Now it's possible to appear offline automagically on MSN Messenger Force 2.4 for PalmPilot, using a special version of flur's Nega patch!

flur also published a paper on how to steal custom emoticons you receive from your contacts through MSN Messenger 6. He was trying it on me when he was writing the tutorial and I must say I was impressed.

However, along with this discovery a security issue saw the surface: sending a custom emoticon broadcasts your IP! "The protocol will even conveniently label who owns what IP by virtue of the To: header".

In order to stay safe, you must disable custom icons to be displayed (the option is available in the conversation options menu). Microsoft got rid of the "Don't share your credit card details in conversations" warning message, but maybe they'll have to replace it with "Don't accept custom emoticons from strangers" ;)

All this and more can be found at flur's MSN website.

You can Mess MSN Messenger... and you can Love Messenger
You can Mess MSN Messenger... and you can Love Messenger

dwergs says ( 06 Jun 2003 ):

"We are closely following what you are doing and we think this is great...".

That's the opinion on Mess.be of the people behind the upcoming Microsoft site: Ilovemessenger.com. As you can judge from the current teaser, it's going to be a site dedicated to customizing MSN Messenger 6 and basically targetted to European countries like Italy, Germany, France and the UK. It'll be like "Messing with MSN Messenger" but in a Microsoft-approved kinda way ;)

You can sign up for an e-mail alert over at Ilovemessenger.com if you want to be notified when the public preview of MSN Messenger 6 has been officially released.

For those who don't understand French:
- the first text box asks for you e-mail address (HTML or plain text)
- the second box is optional and asks for your first name.
- the four extra boxes are optional too and make it easy for you to notify 4 friends about MSN 6.
- click 'Valider' to confirm.

Rolland Garros ending in an all .be tennis final!
Rolland Garros ending in an all .be tennis final!

dwergs says ( 06 Jun 2003 ):

Being a secret tennis fanatic myself, I'm proud to mention one sure thing: a Belgium female player will win Roland Garros this year in an all .be final. It's almost over, but you can still give a shot at trying to win a Peugeot 206 ;)

Random fact (and a bad attempt at bringing this news post on-topic again): the first video game in history, Pong (invented in 1951 by Ralph H. Baer:p) was supposed to look like a tennis game. As a little tribute, I've added two custom pong emoticons (Pong left & Pong right).

Transfer MSN 6 custom emoticons, tabs & display pictures from build 0250 to 0256

dwergs says ( 05 Jun 2003 ):

Here are quick instructions on how to import your build 0250 customizations like tabs, MSN avatars and emoticons into the 0256 build of MSN Messenger 6:

1) Exit MSN 6.0 (including, taskbar Right Click / Exit).

2) X: > Documents and Settings > username > Application Data > Microsoft > MSN Messenger > (open up the directory with numbers).

3) Once in, copy your old contents from your email address folder and paste them, rewriting the directories in the number directory. For example:
- Copy contents of directory (email address)
- Paste contents into directory with numbers

4) Restart MSN 6.0 and you're all sorted.

MSN Messenger 6 build 0256 leaked
MSN Messenger 6 build 0256 leaked

dwergs says ( 05 Jun 2003 ):

WinBeta.org leaked a new build of MSN Messenger 6 (0256). At first sight, the Help menu is extended with Help Topics, Take A Tour, Serivice Status and legal stuff, etc. Also included is Important BETA Information -a precause for leaks? ;)

We don't recommend it, but should you decide to install this new build, beware that...
- You lose all your pre-set custom emoticons and MSN display pictures (at least I have).
- Some previously released MSN 6 patches won't work on this version.
- Hmm... I'm having problem with custom tabs.

Sponsor Agreement clearer in Messenger Plus! 2.10.0036a
Sponsor Agreement clearer in Messenger Plus! 2.10.0036a

dwergs says ( 05 Jun 2003 ):

Messenger Plus! 2.10.36a has been released today with a modified setup that does a better job at demystifying the "Sponsor Agreement" mentioned in our news yesterday. An example: the checkbox now says "I agree, install the sponsor".

If you're running Plus! already, don't even bother to download this minor update because it's merely a reaction to recent complaints. Patchou is still negotiating with his sponsor on the amount of ads that come with the installation of Plus.

Oh and if you want to, according to Patchou, you can easily get rid of all the ads by uninstalling Messenger Plus! 2 and installing it again without ticking the agreement box. Remember that he does need some encouragement for developing an MSN Messenger 6 compatible MP2. But like Patchou said himself: "Money can't match a thanks or a postcard.

 Messers diss Messenger Plus! 2.10.36
Messers diss Messenger Plus! 2.10.36

dwergs says ( 04 Jun 2003 ):

"I know of about 50 that have ditched it..."
-- by anonymous messer.

There's nothing wrong with the developer getting a cash reward for an excellent add-on such as Messenger Plus!, but since Patchou launched the Sponsor Program with Plus! 2.10.36 I have received nearly 100 e-mail complaints about 'annoying stuff' being co-installed with the latest version. Heads up: you can install Plus! without the extra 'sponsoring', but many messers mistakenly consider the Sponsor Agreement for a User Agreement and leave the "I Accept"-box ticked.

Timothy counted 6 desktop links (one to an adult material search), an Internet Explorer bar, 2 invisible and 3 autorun spywares. Oops! But don't give up on Plus! already, because Patchou stated that "this sponsor will be in test for one week. If it doesn't give good enough results it will be removed."

And as you can read in this thread, a new MP2 setup will be distributed later this week without adult content.

My 2 cents: now make it an opt-in tick box, lose Gator and we're all happy.

No need for Away Messages, use Away Pictures to illustrate your status!
No need for Away Messages, use Away Pictures to illustrate your status!

dwergs says ( 04 Jun 2003 ):

I just thought of something silly -and maybe I should get some sleep fast- but since you can not use the away message option from Messenger Plus! with MSN Messenger 6, why don't we all just switch to Away Pictures?

For example, you have to go to the toilet but people are messaging you like crazy. Just switch your Display Picture to one of these MSN avatars for a split second (it takes even less time than setting an away message). The picture will automatically refresh itself in open conversation windows, but it will also appear when somebody double-clicks you to start a convo.

To demonstrate, I've already uploaded a couple of Away Pictures related to going to the toilet, so you get an idea. If you want you can upload your own display pics for statuses like "On The Phone", "Out To Lunch" or any other occupation one can have while being logged into MSN Messenger (oh please, don't start thinking lewd things now).

MSN Messenger Display Pictures and Custom Emoticons: so far so extremely good!
MSN Messenger Display Pictures and Custom Emoticons: so far so extremely good!

dwergs says ( 04 Jun 2003 ):

In only four days our collection of MSN 6 display pictures and custom emoticons has grown to over a thousand images! All thanks to the dedicated messers who've uploaded their own creations. You guys rawk! Keep on rawking! :)

You can help by uploading your self-made 96*96 pixel MSN avatars (our Photoshop template) or 19*19 pixel MSN emoticons (make the background transparant when possible). Make sure you download straight into the correct category.

People who have entered our MSN6 emoticon competition are invited to start uploading their creations now too. The two winners will be announced later this week!

dwergs says ( 04 Jun 2003 ):

Daniel brought to my attention that May was full of .NET Service maintenance. More than usual -five times to be exact- the service status page registered official service downtime. Have they been getting their servers ready for MSN Messenger 6?

MSN Messenger 6 annoyware: the first MSN6 popup bomber
MSN Messenger 6 annoyware: the first MSN6 popup bomber

dwergs says ( 03 Jun 2003 ):

MSN Detonation is a contact bomber that popups 1 to 6 sign-in alerts to an individual contact or simply all your online contacts. Those bombings can even be scheduled every 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, etc.

Isn't this sort of thing annoying? Oooh yes.

Is there a remedy for buddy's going crazy with this tool? Sure, just delete them from your contact list for a while... They can bomb you all day for that matter, you won't notice a thing ;)

Re-re-re-re-relaunch of Mess.be's Block Checker

dwergs says ( 02 Jun 2003 ):

We have activated the MSN block checker for the first time on this new server. For those not familiar with the concept: the Online Status Checker allows you to verify the status of any contact so you can find out who blocked you on MSN Messenger.

We keep our fingers crossed and hope it will stay up for a little longer than usual :)

dwergs says ( 02 Jun 2003 ):

Looks like Microsoft extended the official MSN Messenger 6 help page a lot since my last visit. Thanks to daniel for the heads up.

And Timothy reported that the public preview page has been updated too, showing 'new' emoticons plus announcing backgrounds and display picture customization. Not learning something new here, but notice the download links are now pointing to actual (unavailable) .exe files...

L&H's dope mod for MSN Messenger 5.0 (also known as the weed skin) is updated.

- A spanish version has been added.
- A dutch language version is now available! It is not recommended for users from Belguim: English will be easier to understand for them ;) And it's not quite finished either.
- A french translation beta 2 has been added.

Please note that you have to install the normal english language mod first, and then manually extract the .dll in the zip file into your Messenger installation folder.

And petitxai re-did the L&H skin for amsn so Linux users can get high on MSN too ;)

You can get all these extra tweaks and the latest news about the dope mod at LnHMSN.tk

Tutorial: Reshack your own Custom Animated Emoticons
Tutorial: Reshack your own Custom Animated Emoticons

dwergs says ( 02 Jun 2003 ):

Fury14 wrote a clear tutorial on how to get animated emoticons into MSN Messenger 6. You have to do it the 'reshack way' and your tweaked emoticons won't show at the other end of the conversation (unlike real custom emotes). Read the tutorial here.

Aah... Maybe one day we'll be able to import animated emoticons the easy way and so they can be sent over to our contacts.
