Alpha Preview: Inter Active Display Picture
Alpha Preview: Inter Active Display Picture

dwergs says ( 04 Oct 2003 ):

Timothy is offering an exclusive preview to an upcoming addon for MSN Messenger 6.1 called Inter Active Display Picture. Basically, it allows you to put customized text on your display picture on-the-fly, without the need of an image editor. It's up to you what you use it for, but we suggest to put your name, your status (if you want to, IADP takes care of that automatically) or your mood there.

This is an alpha version (0.6.7) and allows a maximum of 12 characters. But now we want YOUR ideas for options and improvements! Just e-mail to timothy$mess.be (replace $ with @) and who knows, your suggestion (and your name) might be included in the final version!

>> Download Inter Active Display Picture.

Update: If you have downloaded version 0.6.5 please download a new copy because this one held a bug that made the program almost useless.

MSN Messenger 6.1 to support the SPOT Watch
MSN Messenger 6.1 to support the SPOT Watch

dwergs says ( 04 Oct 2003 ):

According to InstantMessagingPlanet, the upcoming 6.1 version of MSN Messenger introduces support for the Microsoft SPOT Watch, which integrates with the wireless MSN Direct service to display news, sports scores, and other information -- including incoming instant messages and .NET Alerts. I bet James Bond can't do all that with his lousy watch.

Godspeed you Microsoft... or over speed.
Godspeed you Microsoft... or over speed.

timothy says ( 03 Oct 2003 ):

It looks like Microsoft is starting the party early by already closing down older Windows Messenger versions. Once you connect with a version below 4.7.2000 you will be signed of automatically, just what happened a week ago with MSN Messenger version 1.0.

So is microsoft messing with its servers, or are they acting over active 12 days before the announced day?

[Thanks Zipp for informing]

 Added: Status Display Picture Changer
Added: Status Display Picture Changer

dwergs says ( 03 Oct 2003 ):

away pictureHuuf made something really interesting, an addon for MSN Messenger 6.1 I would describe as a Status Display Picture Changer. It automatically changes your MSN avatar whenever you change your status. All you have to do is download a couple of our Away, Be Right Back, Busy, On The Phone, Out To Lunch. Then you pre-set them in Huuf's addon, click 'Enable' and off (or away) you go.

>> Get this MSN Messenger download (for 6.1 only). And can you find the two hidden easter eggs?

We collected 90 Status Display Pictures already, but we'd really love to see more of them! Show off your graphic skills and please contribute (here's our display picture template for Photoshop with the correct dimensions and two examples of how to watermark with our URL).

Updated: Jnrzloader for MSN Messenger 6.1.0128 BETA
Updated: Jnrzloader for MSN Messenger 6.1.0128 BETA

dwergs says ( 01 Oct 2003 ):

Jnrz was so kind to update his Jnrzloader for those of us using the latest beta build of MSN Messenger 6.1 (0128). Using this 'loader' (mind you, it's not a patch), you can log in invisibly and/or log in using multiple accounts. As a little extra for those who want a clean conscious it removes the word 'Beta' from MSN Messenger's window title. I know you've been waiting for this, so hurry up and download it!

 W32.Galil.C@mm, just another annoying worm
W32.Galil.C@mm, just another annoying worm

dwergs says ( 01 Oct 2003 ):

W32.Galil.C@mm is a mass-mailing worm that sends itself to the email addresses it finds in the files that have the .htm, .html, .eml, and .txt file extensions. The email will have a variable subject line and attachment name.

This worm sends itself to all the contacts in the Microsoft Outlook address book and MSN Messenger contact list, and it attempts to spread itself through the KaZaA file-sharing network.

September round-up and the future ahead
September round-up and the future ahead

dwergs says ( 01 Oct 2003 ):

What a busy month September was. The Mess.be team posted over 100 news items: that's an average of +3 per day, what makes visiting this site daily recommended to keep track of things. Nonetheless, we'll be working our butts of again in October. Stay focused because this month brings at least 3 important events:

- October 14th: the death of MSN Chat in Europe, the Middle East and most of Asia and Latin America.
- October 15th: the .NET security upgrade declining access to older MSN Messenger and unauthorized third party clients.
- October 23rd: the full release of MSN Messenger 6.1.

Want to become an Emoticon Salesman?

dwergs says ( 30 Sep 2003 ):

Heard of MyEmoticons.com? You should've, as it's the only collection of emoticons worth paying for.

And from now on you can earn big cash for promoting their quality emoticon service. You get a high commission (US $.75c) per sale you generate, either from one of your friends or from a visitor on your website (which doesn't even have to be MSN related).

When you reach $50 of sales, you get paid through bank transfer (or Paypal). An independant third party tracking system is used to ensure impartiality. And trust me, they really pay! (unlike other affiliate programs on the web).

Yesterday Timothy warned you about the evil "featured backgrounds" button in MSN 6.1. To boot this bug, here's another two problems we've encountered:

Wow, it's been ages since I've seen something like this: tools that change your MSN name to the currently playing WinAmp song were very common in the pre-MSN 5 era, but right before they were becoming completely extinct Monty unleashes his WinAmp Auto Nick Changer v1.0 for MSN Messenger 6 and WinAmp 2.x. Download this nickname addon here!

Instant Messaging Alerts as a Political Channel
Instant Messaging Alerts as a Political Channel

    dwergs says ( 29 Sep 2003 ):

Senator Tom McClintock is kicking his California recall election campaign into a technologically higher gear by adding Instant Messaging alerts to share important up-to-the-minute information with voters. "Instant Messaging is the standard way most 30-and-under voters communicate," said Senator Tom McClintock, "Using this kind of cutting-edge communication is indicative of the technology savvy I'll bring to the Governor's office."

Now all we have to do is wait until Ah-nuld kicks his campaign into a technologically higher gear with door-to-door promotional visits by the TX, the female Terminator.

    dwergs says ( 29 Sep 2003 ):

What a quiet day it was, wasn't it? No annoying popup sounds or intrusive taddadams mixed into your MP3s. Well, there's a reason for that: Microsoft forgot to automatically extract the standard sounds from the MSN Messenger 6.1.0128 BETA installer. Although I noticed something was wrong, it took a message from Huuf via timothy before I realised the sound effects were missing! Download the standard MSN Messenger sounds and unzip them into your MSN Messenger directory to bring back the music!

     The evil "Featured Backgrounds..." button
    The evil

    timothy says ( 29 Sep 2003 ):

With the arrival of MSN Messenger 6.1 some new features found their way into your client. But be warned because one of the new buttons holds an awful surprise that will lock up the conversation screen, and making it useless. How to trigger the bug?

  • Hit the "Backgrounds" button in your IM Screen.

  • Select "Featured Backgrounds..."

  • When the popup shows, select another IM screen.

  • Now select the IM screen on which you have opened the "Featured Backgrounds..." popup.

  • The popup will disappear but does not close the background selection menu. Normally this will not cause a problem, but they have disabled this very same menu so you can not close it and return to your IM.

How to fix it? Just stay away from the "Featured Backgrounds..." popup until this gets fixed in a later release.

Reuters Reaches IM Agreement With Microsoft
Reuters Reaches IM Agreement With Microsoft

    dwergs says ( 29 Sep 2003 ):

Reuters Group suddenly has emerged as a hub for instant messaging interconnectivity. The information-services firm this week will disclose an agreement with Microsoft to connect its Reuters Messaging IM service with MSN Messenger. The move comes on the heels of similar agreements with IBM Lotus Software and America Online to connect Reuters IM users with users of IBM Lotus Instant Messaging and AOL Instant Messenger. Additionally, it's one of the first realisations within the frame of the .NET Messenger Partner Program.

By connecting its service, which is used exclusively by financial-services companies, to three of the largest players in the IM world, Reuters lacks only a deal with Yahoo in its attempt to let clients use one tool to communicate with their customers and partners, regardless of which IM product they use.

But for Reuters Messaging users, connectivity comes at a price: Reuters, which has been providing the service for free, plans to begin charging for it early next year.

Get ur blog on! For free.

    dwergs says ( 29 Sep 2003 ):

A blog is a frequent, chronological web publication, often a mixture of what is happening in a person's life and what is happening on the Web. It's a kind of hybrid diary/guide site, although there are as many unique types of blogs as there are people.

For example, you're looking at a blog right now. This one is all about MSN Messenger but in addition, we also have the exit blog which collects some of the best non-MSN links.

And here's a small selection of Messers who are already 'blogging':
    - legallygirl's blog
    - 3V3RT's Weblog
    - CyberRasta's weblog.

If you have an original idea for a 'blog' yourself or just want your own online diary, you can now get one for free in only 3 minutes (or click here if you're from Belgium or The Netherlands). Mention Mess.be in your blog and maybe yours will get featured in our news some day!

Secure MSN Messenger Solution for Corporate Environments
Secure MSN Messenger Solution for Corporate Environments

    dwergs says ( 29 Sep 2003 ):

Rainbow Technologies, a leading provider of digital content and transaction security for the Internet, and WetStone Technologies, a provider of security applications for Internet and intranet environments, today announced the integration of Rainbow's iKey USB authentication token (see image) with WetStone's XSChat to create a fully
user-authenticated, secure IM solution for corporate IM users
    of MSN Messenger.

The user credentials are stored inside the key, enabling strong user authentication and privacy within corporate IM chat sessions. XSChat and iKey add security and portability for instant messaging through two-factor authentication -- something you know (a PIN) and something you own (the USB token).

Something like this could be interesting in a consumer environment too, especially in families with lots of nosey brothers and sisters if you know what I mean.

    zipp says ( 28 Sep 2003 ):

MSN have today updated it's BETA build of the MSN Messenger Client to build 6.1.0128!

In the new release there is not many changes from a visible point of view. Messenger Plus! users need not worry about updating for the new release as it is already fully compatible. It seems that in the new release, the new promised features and games (which will be available in the final version supposedly) are still absent. :(

Reported by Andy and confirmed by me and Timothy: the days of the very first version of MSN Messenger are over. It seems you get automatically kicked off whenever you try to log in to v1.0.

Is Microsoft being impatient? Like the sticky above says, normally you should still have 17 days left to upgrade to MSN Messenger 5.0 or WM 4.7.2000 (or higher).

Worms sent via IM pose serious, growing threat
Worms sent via IM pose serious, growing threat

    dwergs says ( 28 Sep 2003 ):

Virulent new worms that exploit vulnerable instant messaging clients and could infect hundreds of thousands of computers in seconds are a real threat for Internet users worldwide, according to security researchers from Symantec.

Currently, there are about 60 published IM vulnerabilities, according to Eric Chien, chief researcher at Symantec Security Response. Those range from security holes that could be used to crash IM clients in denial of service (DOS) attacks to those that allow attackers to remotely install and run malicious code on computers running the vulnerable IM clients.

"Even with a scenario in which the buddy lists of infected and target machines were identical except for just one IM user, an IM worm could infect 500,000 machines in just 31 seconds".

Most popular IM networks, including AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger and Yahoo's Messenger are designed to be fast and support hundreds of thousands of users, rather than be secure, the researchers found.

Mess.be's initial URL competition: The Final Result
Mess.be's initial URL competition: The Final Result

    dwergs says ( 28 Sep 2003 ):

A lot of Messers have mastered the Google search techniques very nicely and I've seen interesting answers to yesterday's competition question: What was Mess with MSN Messenger's initial Internet address?

As Flaaron puts it in his e-mail: "My 10 hour search was quite interesting... including reading Mess.be news items from november 2001 and seeing header images I had never seen before". Back to the mess-age for him? ;)

Although I have to admit all the URLs & auto-redirects on the free webspaces I've stored the pages at in the past form a giant maze, the question appeared to be harder than I thought. As Zee commented: "I've been lookin for ages.. need sleep". For our own Johnny_Mac (who only joined our team this year) "this became a personal challenge", but sadly he didn't find the answer I was looking for. Chris Bell searched for hours and even went through reading our closed & locked forum and old guestbook while he really should have been doing coursework. I hope you finished all your tasks eventually, Chris!

    The correct answer was NOT messmedia.be, dwergs.studentenweb.org, users.pandora.be/..., mess.org, ace.ulyssis.org/..., kuleuven.ac.be/..., mess.cjb.net, etc.

Nope, the very first official Mess with MSN Messenger address I've spammed eg. the ancient Messenger Plus! forums with once upon a time was... http://change.to/messenger. Congratulations to the single winner: Onno! You'll hear from me.

Thanks to everyone for all the nice comments and birthday wishes I've received. Too bad only one of you scored the free domain name. But stay tuned for a bigger competition real soon!
