Updated scanner and a slideshow for MSN Display Pics
Updated scanner and a slideshow for MSN Display Pics

dwergs says ( 06 May 2006 ):

Based on feedback from our forum members, BritishNimrod has updated the Block-checker Virus Scanner to version 1.2. Check the changes here.

When browsing through my e-mail inbox I noticed another little addon John sent me aaaages ago (last Summer to be precise :S). It's called MSN Animator and cycles -with a customizable delay- through a series of your favorite MSN Display Pictures. Might be useful to show your contacts your latest vacation pics, or uncensored action shots of the party you threw last weekend.

>> Download MSN Block-checker Virus Scanner v1.2.

>> Download MSN Animator (works with WLM too despite the name).

 W32.Nugache.A@mm spreads via Messenger
W32.Nugache.A@mm spreads via Messenger

dwergs says ( 06 May 2006 ):

Panda Software reports the rise of new mass-mailing worm that spreads through e-mail and MSN Messenger and can open a backdoor on the infected system.

Nugache.A is difficult to recognize, as it does not display any messages or warnings that indicate it has reached the computer. Upon infection, Nugache.A creates a copy of itself in the Windows system directory, in a file with the name MSTC.EXE. In addition, it generates several Windows registry entries. Having done this, it opens several communication ports to connect to a series of IP addresses from which it receives remote instructions across P2P networks, allowing an attacker to take malicious action on the affected system. It then sends an IM to all online Messenger users, including a file named ATTACHMENT, BACKUP, DETAILS, DOCUMENTS or FORWARDED.

The Nocturnal Project: Social searching through Messenger
The Nocturnal Project: Social searching through Messenger

dwergs says ( 03 May 2006 ):

Microsoft Research yesterday held its 2006 Silicon Valley Road Show in Mountain View, California. One of the projects demonstrated was Nocturnal, a social search filter based on (MSN and) Windows Live Messenger.

Building on your contacts' favorites and their surf history, a social search query will produce tailored hits. Results which are more relevant to you as an individual in your contact list's universe, will be pushed to the top. Eat this, search engine spammers!

This calls for an example. Chances are high you're a Messer and have our website bookmarked. Now, if one of your contacts wants to add some creativity to his (or her) conversations and searches for the single word query "emoticons" (without specifying the software), Mess.be will nevertheless gain a few places in the top results because Nocturnal assumes that -since one of the buddies is a fan- it's an excellent website to get your emoticons from (correctomundo!). Similarly, if one of your contacts is a real player and interested in more details on how to practice "polygamy", his attention will be diverted to our Mess Patch instead ;)

You'll also be able to set the depth of your peer group, which could range from just the contacts on your lists to... contact's contact's contacts (remember the Friends List we covered earlier?).

Nocturnal is currently a prototype and although ready to be launched, researcher Dahlia Malkhi could not comment on concrete plans to implement it. If it would, you will of course first have the choice to opt in to share your search information, for obvious privacy reasons.

UPDATE (from internetnews.com): "Nocturnal has two components. The first is found in (...) Messenger, which has a shared information folder. Drop whatever you want to share in it and that information is shared with selected friends or anyone on your MSN buddies list. (...) The second part is a toolbar for the [Internet Explorer] that lets you rate pages and capture links in your shared folder, allowing them to be shared with other people."

Following the French Miss Destinée campaign we talked about last week and which went live today*, we've been informed by Messer thefighter about another marketing effort now from MSN UK. Although it covers Windows Live Messenger to great extent, The Insider Club serves as an introduction to the entire Windows Live portfolio.

windows live contact cardsBy exploring the Flash website and clicking links, visitors can unlock up to three extra levels that each come with new information and special bonuses. For example, the first 50.000 people who unlock level 3 (HINT: Default, Sky Blue, Pink, Light Purple) get a free set of personalised Windows Live Contact Cards, similar to the 2004 MSN Cards except this time with Windows Live branding and the possibility to print your WeeMee avatar on the card's back.
